1991 Topps Stadium Club Variations

 

This morning there was a forum post over at the Trading Card Database discussing a variation in the 1991 Topps Stadium Club set.  It seems that most if not all of the cards have a one of these back variations.  While some members are working on putting a checklist together it's noted that cards fall into one of three catagories.  Some cards have and A or B by the Topps copyright on the bottom right of the card, or a C or D, or E or F.  Robin falls into the A or B category.  I don't think there's any rarity to either variation as I found an example of each is just a handful of cards.

If you're having trouble seeing the variations, you're not alone I had trouble with my old eyes as well.  Here's a close up of the two different variations.

 Not included in the regular Stadium Club set the Chrome product extends the checklist by another 100 cards to a 400 card set and Robin is include.  As a matter of fact the Brewers add 5 more cards to the checklist with the extra 100 cards.

2019 COMC Black Friday Haul #10

I can be very critical sometimes at Topps, but that comes when you've had the exclusive MLB license for trading cards for a decade.  But for all my criticism I always try to give credit when it's due and Topps has done an outstanding job with it's reboot of Stadium Club.  Since the product came back in 2014 they've done a great job at base card design and photo selection.  They also include a healthy checklist of veterans and HOFers in the base set.  Robin has been featured a few times in Stadium Club.  While I'm a big fan of action shots, I love this photo.  It's so well framed, Yount takes up most of the card.  The player and team name and Stadium Club logo don't get in the way.  Just an all around great looking card.  As with just about every Topps issue this card comes with multiple variations besides this Red Foil version.  But this is the first of the variations I've been able to get a hold of.

I had had my eye on one of these last year around Black Friday time and it got snagged right before I went to buy it.  But in this game patience usually pays off.  Sometimes with just finding the card again, but sometimes finding cheaper too.  There were a few of us Yount fans that had an interesting discussion about this card when it first came out.  I personally really like this card.  I've posted before about the photo shoot this image came from.  Robin's 1995 Pinnacle Sidelines subset card also came from this photo shoot.  And out of all the cards in the set this is the only one that portrays the play doing another sport.  

Another Episode of - Haven't I Seen That Before?

Funny story... I posted the 2017 Series 1 Yount checklist and was just casually scrolling down my blog feed when I notice something and it made me do a double take.  I'll be honest had I not just done a post about Robin's 2005 Upper Deck Past Time Pennants card this would have totally escaped me.  I had to laugh.  Not only does Topps recycle the same image over and over again within it's own products, yes I know they use licensed images, but now we get to see Topps use images that other card companies have used.  I'm not mad it just makes me shake my head a little.  I mean Robin played baseball for 20 years!  I'm sure he had tens of thousands of potential images that could be used.  That's probably why I was a big cheerleader for his Stadium Club card last year.  It was unique to the set being the only card not to feature a player doing something basebally, and it was an image I hadn't seen used before.

Howdy.  It's been awhile I know.  I've been up in the Alaskan Arctic looking for salmon.  It was pretty awesome.  Didn't find many salmon, but did get to raft down some pretty spectacular rivers and streams.  We were based out of an old oil exploration camp called Umiat.  Type that into Google Earth to see how remote that was.  Anyways it's time to get back to Yount cards.

When Stadium Club came out fellow Yount collector Tony L from Off Hiatus Sportcards tweeted an image of Robin's card at me and he was a little upset about the image used.  At first it did take me by surprise.  We agreed that it was most likely an image from a photo shoot that led to Robin's 1991 Pinnacle Sidelines card.  I posted about the original image a while back.  I think the cards grown on Tony and to be honest I actually really like it.  

Stadium Club was loaded with great images, but this card is unique.  After looking through most of the images I do believe that Robin's card is the only one to feature a non-baseball image.  Like all Topps products plenty of parallels to chase, just like this Trump err Gold Parallel.

I recently added 7 new Yount cards to the collection. All from 2016 sets and 6 of those were all purchased with my latest order from Justcommons.com.  As is my MO I waited till I had 3 or 4 sets I needed to pick up cards for my Brewers team sets as luck would have it there were still a few Yount inserts to be had.  Besides having a base card and all the parallels to that in this year's Stadium Club set Robin is also featured in the Legends Die-Cut set.  

I'm a big fan of oddball cards and I consider the die-cuts a little oddball.  The card is Topps Chromium and is very shiney and did I mention die-cut?  These fall one per box, so out of a set of 10 a harder pull.

2016 Topps Stadium Club Yount checklist

The first few years of the Stadium Club brand all kind of look a like, kind of like Upper Deck's early issues, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.  The set features full bleed photograph and the player name and logo are tucked away at the bottom the card letting the great crisp photograph do it's job. We even get another great photo on the back.  The card itself begs to be slipped into a 9 pocket page for display and back in 1993 pocket pages were still relatively pricey.  

This was Topps' original premium brand and packs were not cheap compared to the flagship.  Overall a pretty great card.

The newest Yount to land on my doorstep.  I just got my order from justcommons.com.  I tend to use the site to complete my Brewers team sets and to pick up cheap TTM cards.  I also pick up Robin's new base cards when I can for cheap. I love that if you spend $10 on the site, which isn't that hard, it's free shipping.  I ended up picking up a couple of these cards, one for my team set and of course one for the Yount Collection.  This year marks the return of Stadium Club and I have to say I like the design. It's pretty classic Stadium Club and while I don't like the price point or the whole 3 mini box per box structure, I like the design and the set size is small enough that it probably wouldn't be too hard to complete, but it's large enough to have a nice mix of past, present, and future stars in it.

Besides the base there are also 5 parallels to chase in this set and Robin has a buy back auto numbered to 5.  So far this is the only card from the set I've picked up, but I'm sure I'll start working my way through the parallels.
