2010 Topps National Chicle NC Back

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: National Chicle
Card Number: 210
Card Type: Base parallel
Parallel Type: National Chicle Back

A one and done set for Topps, unless you count the 2009 football set, National Chicle was not so well received when it came out.  At least that's how I remember it.  The biggest complaint was the quality of the art for the cards.  Topps used a small stable of artists for the set and while art is subjective it's hard to have consistent quality when you ask artists to pump a ton of work out in a short amount of time.  However that being said Mike Kupka's painting of Robin is pretty sweet.  As is the case there are a bunch of back parallels to chase in the set.  The National Chicle back is the most common of the parallels and is pretty underwhelming.

In 2010, Topps released 3 vintage sets with this one, Allen and Ginter and a second consecutive year of  Topps 206.  The next year Topps decided to scrape the National Chicle and 206 tribute sets and released the inaugural set of Gypsy Queen.  I'll be honest I actually really like this set and bought more boxes than I probably should have, but there are some nice relics and the autographs were on card.  And there are a couple really well done cards.  Topps current house artist Mayumi Seto, who also does all of the Topps Transcendence art cards, has some work in this set.

2010 Topps Series 1 Hat Logo Manurelic

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Series 1 Baseball
Card Number: MHR-94
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Manufactured Hat Logos
Card Attributes: Manurelic, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 68/99

Wow what a crappy scan.  Robin has 3 cards in the Hat Logo set.  While I'm not a huge fan of manurelic cards, I really like this set.  You get a large patch and being numbered to just 99 are fairly rare, but not so much to be unattainable.

2010 Topps Tribute Triple Bat Relic Black Parallel

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Topps Tribute
Card Number: TTR-RY
Card Type: Triple Relic Parallel
Relic Type: Bat
Parallel Type: Black
Card Attributes: Bat memorabilia, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 47/50

2010 was a good year for me.  I got a new job, moved to the big city up here in Alaska, and I bought a house.  All pretty big stuff.  2010 wasn't not a huge year for new Yount cards.  The Trading Card Database list just 69 cards, cross referencing with Beckett, they list 76.  That said Robin did grace a lot of Topps' sets that year.  He didn't have a base card in the 2010 Tribute set, but did have multiple relic cards.

I wish I remembered where and when I picked this card up.  I'm positive it was off of ebay, but the other details escape me.  As far as relics go it's pretty boring. Three pieces of bat with the grain all going the same way.  And the back of the card is no better.   So much wasted space up top too.  The triple relics do have an autograph version and if Robin had had an autographed version of this card, which he does not, that's what would have gone in that big void by his head.

2010 Topps Update Bat Barrel Manurelic

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Update Series Baseball
Card Number: MBB-156
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Manufactured Bat Barrels
Card Attributes: Manurelic bat barrel, serial numbered
Serial Number: 63/99

I figured why not follow up a manurelic with another manurelic.  This one comes from the 2010 Update set.   I won't repeat my tirade about manurelics from the last post, but I will say out of all the different manurelics Topps has put out these Manufactured Bat Barrels are my favorite.  They came in 3 different flavors.  I blogged about the black version in May this year and there is also a pink version number to just one.

I just like the look of the card. The bat barrel is huge, the card think, in hand these look great.  Add to that that even the base card here is fairly rare, numbered to only 99.  That's not something Topps does very often with it's manurelics.  The set itself is pretty large with over 175 subjects to pick from.  Heck the Brewers even have 6 subjects in the set including Paul Molitor.

2010 Topps Sterling

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Sterling
Card Number: 52
Card Type: Base
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 170/250

I figured I might as well put Robin's Sterling card from the last year of the issue.  I'm not sure why Topps discontinued the brand.  I remember it being fairly popular, even with sticker autos.  Not that I'm advocating Topps to put out another high end product few of use can afford.

True to form base cards were numbered to only 250 and featured a player on foilboard framed.  This year every box or I guess you could call it pack, since there was one pack per box, had a theme.  There were lots of themes and I'm not sure which theme Robin fell under and I couldn't find a comprehensive list of themes anywhere. Each pack had 3 base cards, a relic card and autograph or auto relic #/10 or less.  Each box also had a mystery pack with a framed base parallel or a cut signature.

Overall the design isn't that much different from years past and the image used was and is a heavily used one.

2010 Topps Cards Your Mom Threw Out 1975

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Series 1 Baseball
Card Number: CMT-24
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Cards Your Mom Threw Out - Basic Back

In 2010 Topps hit upon an idea that ended up being hugely successful, The Cards Your Mom Threw Out online promotion.  If you don't remember the premise I'll sum it up.  Seeded in Series 1, 2 and Update were code cards.  You set up an account online, entered your codes, and you got a card.  Then you could trade that card or have it actually shipped to you.  I can't remember what Topps charged for shipping, heck it might have even been free.  I ended up getting some great 50's and 60's cards.  Not of anyone big, but it was cool to unlock a 56 Topps card.  Of course I also unlocked a huge amount of junk wax and condition was an issue, but free cards are free cards.  Topps continues with it's online code promotions today, but they pale in comparison to this first attempt.

In addition to the promotion Topps also had an insert called Cards Your Mom Threw Out that ran through all three series.  They featured classic cards from all years and also featured an original back parallel.  Robin would get two cards in the set, his 1975 rookie card was featured in Series 1 and his 1985 Topps card for some reason in Series 2.  Topps loves to reprint it's old cards and maybe it's time they stop.  At least once a year I think we get a reprint of some sort of Robin's 1975 card.

2010 Topps Update Turkey Red Insert

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Update Series Baseball
Card Number: TR145
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Turkey Red

This year is the first year Topps hasn't included some mini, retro, or vintage insert in it's flagship set. But back in 2010 the insert was Turkey Red and it ran through Series 1 and 2 and Update.  Of course Topps also released a Turkey Red insert in 2009 and 3 full sets of Turkey Red from 2005 to 2007 and offered  smaller sets exclusively online in 2013 and 2014.

The 2009 and 2010 sets are some of my favorites and an insert set I actively sought to complete.  I finished off the 2010 set pretty quickly and I still need 11 more cards to complete the 2009 set.  And while I fell in love with these insert sets I made no move to aquire any of the other stand alone products other than cards for my Brewers team sets.

Robin's card was found in Topps Update, as 50 cards were released in each series.

It's a great looking card even if the photo used has graced lots of other cards.

2010 Topps MLB Logoman Manurelic

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: Finest
Card Number: LM-45
Card Type:Insert
Insert Set: Logoman Manurelic
Card Attributes: Manurelic, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 16/50

If you haven't noticed I've been featuring 2010 cards for the past few posts.  I've been working through my collection and scanning cards front and back and just happen to have been working on my 2010 Younts.  It's fun to revisit certain years and 2010 was a big one of me.  I got a new job, moved, and eventually bought a house all that year and Robin had some great cards.

One that I was really excited about when it came out was this one.  The Logoman cards were spread out though lots of different Topps products that year.  Robin's card could be found in Topps Finest if I remember right.

Numbered to only 50 copies and there are no parallels.  This was it. The scan doesn't really do the card justice as this card is very shiny and looks great in hand.  These were tough to find back in 2010 and almost impossible to find now.  And next to the manufactured Bat Barrel cards is probably one of my favorite cards from this year.

2010 Topps National Chicle Bazooka Back

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Card Set: National Chicle
Card Number: 210
Card Type: Base Parallel
Parallel Type: Bazooka Back

A one and done product by Topps back in 2010 National Chicle brought back the 1930's issue with some great art cards.  I have a feeling this set was fairly expensive to produce. All the autos were on card and all the cards were actually painted.  Add to that that Topps already producing other vintage sets.  Chicle was most likely replaced with Gypsy Queen the following year.  The set falls in the low to mid range and while not cheap it was affordable.  Each box promised 2 autos, a relic, and a box loader.  The base cards also had a bunch of parallels, some very rare and low numbered other like this Bazooka back were unnumbered and a little easier to find.  The Bazooka back could be considered the third tier in rarity behind the base and National Chicle backs.

The artist for this card was Mike Kupka.  On the  back of the base cards the artist gets a nice write up.  Mike has his own blog too you can find it here, although he hasn't posted on it in quite some time.

Overall Mike did a great job on Robin's card, the same can't be said for all the cards in the set for all 13 artists, but there are some great looking cards.

2010 Topps Update Black Bat Barrel Parallel Manurelic

Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2010
Set: Topps Baseball Update Series
Card Number: MBB-156
Card Type: Insert Parallel
Insert Set: Manufactured Bat Barrels
Parallel Type: Black Bat Barrel
Card Attributes: Manufactured Relic, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 09/25

Love them or hate them Topps Manufactured relics are probably here to stay.  And while Topps' creations are hit or miss, sometimes they're a grand slam.  When Topps put out these bat barrel replicas in the 2010 Update Series it was s culmination on a year of interesting ideas.  But these were by far the best of the bunch.  These cards are incredibly think and the scan does not do the card justice.  They came in a couple varieties.  The base card was numbered to 99 and the ultra rare pink barrel was numbered to just one, but for my money the black bat barrels were the best looking.

2010 Topps retired photo variation

Card manufacturer: Topps
Card Set: Topps Baseball Series 1
Year: 2010
Card Number: 116
Card Type: Photo Variation
Variation Type: Retired Player Photo variation

I really miss when Topps inserted it's base variations with retired and HOF players.  It was easy to tell you got something special, now with photo variation, stat variation, and those stupid sparkle variations you pretty much have to have a cheat sheet to figure out if you pulled a variation.  And yes Topps still had more variation gimmicks in this set.

Robin was featured two years in a row as a base card variation starting in 2009.   You can see the full checklist here.

I love this card what a great photo.  And in an old school Brewers uniform.

OK detectives, who is #9 sliding behind Robin? I've got my guess.

2010 Panini Century Collection Souvenir Stamps Relic

Card Manufacturer: Panini
Card Set: Century Collection
Year: 2010
Card Number: 27
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Souvenir Stamps
Card Attributes: Relic, Stamp, Serial numbered
Serial Number: 44/50
Note: Inserted stamp is an 1939 Baseball Centennial Commemorative

I just got my COMC Black Friday package in the mail.  I've been working on their challenges and saving up my store credit as I've been earning it.  Over all I ended up getting 26 new cards and 20 of those were new Yount cards for the collection.  Now the count on my master spreadsheet tells me I have 1006 unique items in the collection.  I'm really happy about that, as it was one of my collecting goals this year.  As I neared the mark I know that my annual Black Friday shopping spree on COMC was going to push me over the top.

So I'll be showcasing all 20 new cards in the coming months.  I got a nice smattering of new and old, parallels, base cards, inserts and even a few relics.

I figure I'd feature my favorite pick up.  I didn't even buy this on Black Friday.  I ended up seeing this on the site and it was such a good deal I had to pick it up. It was by far the most expensive of the cards I bought in my haul, but it only cost me about $6.  I've been looking for cards from this set since it came out, but I always kept getting outbid and eventually other sets and cards pulled me away.  Robin even has a base card in this set that I haven't found yet.

I find it funny that Panini got around the use of logos by using Robin's high school photo.  Yeah that's an old photo of a very young Robin Yount.  The T on the hat stand for William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California.

I really like the overall look of the card.  I do find the placement of the relic right on Robin's chest a little disturbing, but over all not a bad looking card.  The 1939 Baseball Centennial Stamp is great too.  I have one other baseball card that has that stamp embedded in it and I think it works great.  The stamp itself isn't that rare with a printing of about 81 million stamps.  Even being 75 years old the stamp is only worth a couple bucks, but it is uncancelled and the card is numbered to just 50!

Robin also has a couple more cards in various inserts sets with memorabilia and autographs.

A new Yount for the Supercollection.

Is it terrible I've given my Yount collection a name?  The Awesomest Robin Yount Supercollection in the Universe(or at least Alaska) que Queen with Flash Gordon soundtrack.

I don't know if I can really call it a super collection though.  I don't own any 1/1's but that's because I'm cheap.  I had been waiting to pick up a nice 2010 Tribute relic waiting till the prices went down.
And I gots me a nice one.  A nice triple bat relic #d 47/50.

I also finally picked up his base Sterling card, but haven't gotten it yet.  The last batch of /250 Sterling cards went for close to 15 bucks which I thought was crazy.  I probably should wait till next year to try and pick anything else up.  I can get his 2008 Sterling base cards for about $2.50 each right now and the lower numbered parallels are also getting much cheaper.

Right now my Yount binder and monster box is packed pretty tight and I'm going to have to do some major reorganizing and go through the collection to make sure I've got everything all logged and then hopefully post the list here so if anyone has any Younts I don't have we can work out a trade.  Unfortunately I have a ton of Yount. I think last time I looked at my Spreadsheet counter I was up around 2600.  That's total Younts and includes a lot of 500 1990 Topps I bought years ago for about a penny a piece.  I pretty sure I'm up around 500 individual unique Younts.  Yount still has a pretty big following if bidding on Ebay is any indication but not as big as say Griffey, Ripken, or Pujols.

And since I've slowed down on picking up new Younts it seems I've taken up that slack with picking up more Rollie Fingers.  That collection is coming along really nice, though I'm bummed I missed another 2010 Sterling book the other day.  It was a nice one too.

Well keep up the good work my friends
cb out.

2010 Yount Pick ups.

I've been on a bit of spending spree.  The last year there were lots of higher end cards of Mr. Yount that came out and were on the market.  I got a little impatient seening as my Yount collection hasn't really been expanding much this year.

The first few pick ups I've already posted but I'll put them up again all in a row.
Series 1 Manupatch Hat old style.  Still looking for my baseball mitt logo, and I haven't seen one in a while.

Manu Bat Barrel #d to 99.  Dispite what everybody says I really like these cards.

Manu Bat Barrel Black #d to 25 slightly damaged.  Notice the little nick on the right hand side.  Still a nice card.
There is the super rare 1/1 pink bat card still out there but I doubt I'd be able to afford it.

Topps National Chicle had a yount card with back Variations.  I've got the regular and NC backs and I'm looking at a Bazooka Back that I might have to pull the trigger on.  There's also the umbrella back but I haven't seen one up on ebay so I don't know if I'm going to be able to find it.

There's also the Series 1 Topps Variation card #116.  Yount also had one in last years set.

The Series 2, 4th of July Manu Hat patck #d 35/99 fresh from the mail.

Another pick up was the 2010 Finest Logoman patch card #d 16/50, finally!
2010 Topps Update also had this Yount in the Turkey Red insert set.  Fitting after Thanksgiving.

cb out.
