All About the Base - 1983 Topps Team Leaders / Checklist

Year: 1983
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 321
Card Type: Base, Subset
Subset: Team Leaders / Team Checklist

We end our time in 1983 with the third card featuring Robin in the 1983 Topps set.  Robin shares the card Pete Vuckovich.  The early 1980's were a great time in team facial hair.  You had Rollie Fingers' handlebar, Gorman Thomas' crumbduster, Vuck's Fu Manchu.  And while Robin was leading the team is just about every stat he wasn't winning the facial hair battle, but he was giving it his best shot.  It's too bad the 1983 set didn't have a World Series sub-set that would have been nice for us Brewers fans, well except for the loss.  Instead we got sub-sets like the Super Veterens, All-Stars, Record Breakers and of course these team leader / team checklist cards.  Still nice to have multiple Robin Yount cards in the set.

1990 Upper Deck Brewers Checklist

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Flagship Baseball
Card Number: 91
Card Type: Base, Checklist

It's hard to believe it's already been 6 years since Upper Deck put out a baseball set.  Let's time warp back and visit the second set Upper Deck put out.  In the 1990 set beside the main checklist cards found every at all the 100's each team got a team checklist card featuring a star player from the team.  The cards were illustrated by famed sports artist Vernon Wells.  He also did a lot if not all of the insert illustrations.  It was Upper Deck's answer to Donruss' Dick Perez stuff.

2016 Topps Series 1 Robin Yount Checklist and Gallery

I've already posted this checklist and added it to the new 2016 checklist tab, but this will serve as the image gallery page as well.  Robin has 6 cards in Series 1, some are pretty common inserts.  Others are a little rarer.

Baseball Cards Magazine - Sept. 1990

Year: 1990
What? Baseball Cards Magazine with Robin on the Cover
Date: Sept 1990

One of my goals this year is to add more Yount reading material to the collection.  As it is I have a few magazines and programs, but it's an area I have a ton of room to add to.  This gem comes from 1990 and I can remember buying this right off the rack.  I've mentioned this before, but my father was in the Army right up until I graduated High School and his last post was in Berlin, Germany.  I worked on the compound that housed the commissary, PX, Burger King, and bookstore.  So on my way home from work, I worked at Burger King in high school, I would stop by the base bookstore, which was close to where I picked up the bus to my housing area and peruse the comic books and magazines.  Baseball Cards was one of my favorite magazines to pick up and I was pretty religious about picking up the newest issue.  I still have most of them squirreled away somewhere. The bookstore didn't get Beckett, so this was my price guide and it had great articles.  Plus the magazine was the thickness of a small towns telephone book.  It was full of mail order advertisments.  This issue was great for a couple of reasons.  First of course it features Robin on the cover and secondly there is a great checklist for Robin that's not too shabby for 1990 and a great article.  Baseball Cards also had baseball cards!  In every issue there were 6 cards, two 3 panel sheets inserted into the magazine and this issue featured rookie cards of Sammy Sosa and Robin Ventura. (Sorry I didn't scan them)

I really do love those old mail order ads and looking at what stuff was going for back then.  Crazy what some of the prices were.

Here's the obligatory look what Robin's rookie card was going for in the price guide.

2015 Leaf 25th Anniversary Pre-Production Proof Checklist

I try to be on top of stuff, but every now and then stuff falls though the cracks. This is especially true with the smaller non-licensed card makers like Leaf and Hits.  But recently Leaf sold a bunch of it's pre-production proofs for it's upcoming 25th Anniversary? product.  I guess it's just called 25th, but I'll assume it celebrates the 25th anniversary of 1990 Leaf, the first full fledged Leaf set not a Canadian version of Donruss.  And the design pays homage to the 1990 set.  Other than a tweet and finished eBay listing I can't find anymore information on the set.  Not even Leaf's website has it listed and neither Blowoutcards.com and DAcardworld.com have anything listed about the set.  The tweet from Leaf says this is due out in December so I guess we'll just have wait and see.  But I was able to find all the old listings on eBay and piece together a checklist of what was offered and save the images for posterity.  These cards were offered as a buy it now and the Metal cards were priced at $29.99, the Acetate proofs were priced at $24.99 and the Metal Prismatic Gold card was priced at $79.99.  Not bad prices for 1/1 cards.  A couple of these cards are already back on the market.

Here is the checklist, which will be added to my 2015 checklist and images follow.  All cards are 1 of 1's and I'm not sure if they have anything on the backs or a card number associated with them.  I have asked a current seller and I'm waiting on an answer.  If I find anything out I'll update this post.

Update:  Well I heard back from the eBay seller that has a couple of these up right now and they are indeed blank backed.  The other news is that Leaf has finally released information on the 2015 Leaf 25th set.  Looks like that set will be all autos.  4 cards per pack, 1 pack per box deal.  No checklist yet, but I guess we can assume since Robin has pre-production cards he will also be featured in the set, so that means more autos to chase.  And from what I can tell all autos will be on card!

The Robin Yount Magazine and other periodical Checklist

While most of my Robin Yount collection is his baseball cards I decided long ago that I wouldn't limit myself to just those.  In my collection I have baseball cards, drinkware, bobbleheads, coins, and of course magazines.  As long as it features Robin I'll add it to my collection.

So this post is all about the magazines he's been featured on over the years.  This is really a reference for me.  I by no means have all of these, but I thought I'd put to together a checklist and gallery of periodicals that Robin has graced the cover on, at least in part.  This includes, magazine, books, newspapers, media guides, programs, whatever. I realize this is not complete so feel free to chime in if you know of something I've missed and I'll add it to the checklist.

I'll start adding some images when I have time.

2014 Topps Throwback Thursday 1980's Online Exclusive Postcard

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Card Set: Thowback Thursday 1980's Postcard
Year: 2014
Card Number: NNO
Card Type: Online Exclusive box set
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial number: 33/49

What better way to celebrate Thurday then with a throwback?  A Topps throwback.  These cards were part of a larger 15 card set you could only find on Topps.com.  Topps did a 2014 version and these 1980's versions.  I for the life of me couldn't  find a full checklist for the sets.  Topps website isn't very helpful.  But I've pieced together the 15 card set from the internet.

Wade Boggs
George Brett
Gary Carter
Dwight Gooden
Tony Gwynn
Orel Hershiser
Paul Molitor
Jack Morris
Dale Murphy
Eddie Murray
Cal Ripken, Jr
Ryne Sandberg
Mike Schmidt
Ozzie Smith
Robin Yount

The cards measure 5x7 inches and are hand numbered to only 49!  I think I was pretty lucky to be able to pick this guy up for about 5 bucks.

The card has a very 1980's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air look to it. But a great oddball and I'm a lover of all things oddball.
