On the Radar - 2021 Topps Finest - Yount Checklist

 I was surprised to see Robin in the checklist for this year's Finest offering.  Not so surprised when looking at the insert theme, Finest Legacies.  And he's paired with, not surprisingly, Christian Yelich.  One note and I'll make sure to correct this if need be that the Finest Legacies has a autographed version, but only Yelich is noted on the checklist for that set, so if it turns out that Robin is also featured on those cards I'll amend this checklist.

We are lucky that Robin played long enough to be in the inaugural release of Topps Finest. From what I've read Finest was a huge success and I guess we can infer that since Topps has been putting out a Finest set ever since. But back then there weren't 18 types of refractors there was just one and it was super popular.  As a matter of fact Baseball Cardpedia states that it's estimated that there only 30000 base cards for each player produced and about 241 refractors.  That base allocation may seem like a lot, but remember this is 1993, the height of overproduction where card companies boasted that cards were limited to just 100,000 copies!

By today's standards this card isn't rare.  But it's refractor parallels are and are highly sought after, As a matter of fact collector Phil Gold has a website documenting his hoarding quest and realized real time prices.  Robin's refractor goes for about $70 raw and almost $250 for a graded Mint 9.

Me I'm a simple man and I'm more than happy to just have Robin's base card.  Although I still keep my eye out for a reasonable refractor.

I was finally able to get my hands on one of Robin's newest cards.  It's nice to see Robin featured in the set somewhere.  These base Generations inserts fall about one per mini box, although I could be wrong about that.  There is also an autograph version of this set, but Robin isn't featured in it.  This insert also has three parallels all extremely rare.  The refractor is numbered to just 25, the red refractor to 5 and the superfractor to just one.

As far as design goes I'm less than blown away, but a new card is a new card.  And with the parallels being so low numbered this will probably be the only version I get.  And as I posted before, Topps was offering this design as wall art on their website.

I was super excited to see this card in my mailbox today.  This year's Finest is very sparse with Brewers. As a matter of fact there are only 3 featured in the base set with all the parallels. No Brewer graces any of the inserts except for Robin's auto in the Finest Greats set.

Besides the xfractor auto there are also all the other parallels associated with this insert. I'm pretty happy just to have gotten this one for a decent price. I most likely will not be pursuing the others, but this card now has a good home.  The scans don't do the shiny goodness justice and it's been a long time since I added a new autograph card to the collection.
