On the Radar - Topps Now Turn Back the Clock #200

 My beloved Brewers have been knocked out the playoffs yet again.  Sigh.  But Topps decided to give me a consolation prize and feature Robin Yount on yet another Topps Now Turn Back the Clock.  This one celebrating Robin's multiple 4 hit games in the 1982 World Series.  Last year the Brewers only had two cards in the Turn Back the Clock set (both CC Sabathia), and this year Robin gets two!! I'm not complaining.  Usually these are only offered for 24 hours but the last couple weeks Topps has been throwing out almost a weeks worth of cards at a time.  Robin's card would have been offered from Oct 17 to Oct 18, but is available at the time of writing (Oct 13, 2021) until Oct 18th.  Robin's last card only sold 436 cards (and I bought 5 of those).

I know I know you're probably going to say GMA?  I really don't target, or for that matter really care about, graded cards.  Sure I have a  nice stack of graded Younts, but most of those were gifts.  As a matter of fact as far as I can remember I've only really ever gone after two graded cards.  And this is one of them.  I can remember really wanted a really nice 1982 Topps Yount card.  Remembering why I wanted it is the problem.  The other thing is I have no idea why I settle on going after and acquiring a GMA graded example.  Probably because, like me, it was cheap.  I for the life of me don't remember what I paid for this but I know it wasn't pricey.  And for all the crap GMA may get for being a bargain basement grading company this 82 Topps Yount is a very nice looking card.  Not perfectly centered, which I guess doesn't affect the grade, but all four corners are sharp and the card is super clean.

On the Radar - Topps Online 150 Years of Professional Baseball on-demand card

I was hoping Robin would be featured in this set.  I was really hoping he'd get an artists rendition card and he still might.  Robin has card #130 in the set and celebrates his 1982 MVP award.

Like the rest of these cards these will be available till next Tuesday or you can wait and pick them up on the secondary market.

1982 was the big year for Robin.  Silver Slugger and Golden Glove Awards, AL MVP, second All-Star Game appearance, and almost winning the World Series.  Of course all of that would happen well after this card was released, but 1982 was a big year.  I've always called this set "the hockey sticks."  It probably would have worked well as a hockey card design.  I like the design.  I screams 80's.  The colors, the pinstriping of the card.  This is not full blown MTV 80's, that's a few years away, but this card very much represents the shrugging off of the last vestiges of the 1970s.  Ahem.

Robin is still young enough in his career that he's able to afford the room on the back of his card for some Topps trivia and a cartoon.  Soon enough there won't be any room on the back of his cards for anything, but stats.  The card number is a little low and it goes back and forth in 1982 Topps.  Most veterans don't have the room for the upper trivia box and the card number is placed higher.

As a Brewers fan and a Brewers card collector there are few cards or card sets as iconic as the Milwaukee Brewers Police issues.  The sets started in 1982 and, at least in my home town, were given out at the 4th of July festivities.  The sets continued non-stop up into the early 90's and then every now and then a new set gets issued.  The early 80's sets are fun to store as the cards are larger than the standard size baseball card, by probably a good half inch in each direction.

This card comes by way of a trade with Tony L. over at Off Hiatus Baseball Cards.

He was nice enough to send me the whole team set, which is great, because not only did I get a complete team set, but I get to officially add a new Yount and Rollie Fingers to my player collections.

The Police issues are an interesting bunch of cards for a player collector. Since these cards were printed for each participating department and featured the department's name on the front and back there are literally tens to hundreds of possible variations for any given year.  Depending on how one collects that could mean lots of Younts to chase and since I consider each card from a different department to be a unique card that means I have lots of cards to chase.  And that's the way I like it.

2007 Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 1982 Commemorative Medallion

Here is a great oddball I picked up a few years ago.  These medallions commemorate the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers American League Championship.  The set consisted of 23 medallions.  You had to buy a paper, clip the coupon, find a store that still had these in stock, and hand over $2.99. Coupons were put in papers from April 23, 2007 through May 18, 2007. There was also an album you could put all your medallions in. I'm not sure if the albums were inserted in the papers or were available where the Medallions where sold.  This set had all the big names and some names you probably didn't know unless you're a Brewers fan.  Rollie Fingers, Paul Molitor, Cecil Cooper, and more all had coins.

I'm not sure what day Robin's medallion coupon came in the paper.  A really cool oddball commemorating the best team and season the Brewers ever put together.

1982 McDonald's Milwaukee Brewers Glass with Ben Oglivie

I featured this glass a while back with the rest of my drinkware, but I figure I'd feature it again all by itself.

These glasses were available at McDonalds back in 1982 and produced by MSA. I'm assuming these were only available in Wisconsin.  I couldn't find any other baseball teams offered, but there was a football set featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers, commemorating their 50th season. I'm not sure when these were offered, if it was early in the year or later after the Brewers had won the pennant and League Championship.  There are 4 glasses in the set.  This glass featuring Robin Yount and Ben Oglivie and ones featuring Ted Simmons and Rollie Fingers, Cecil Cooper and Gorman Thomas, and Paul Molitor and Pete Vuckovich.  I don't remember what I paid for the glass, but it wasn't very much. You can find these for about $5 a piece or less and full sets for under $20.  I love the old oddball stuff like this and I love the fact that you get two players for the price of one.  One of these days I might have to pick up the rest of the set, especially one with Rollie for his player collection.

Years ago I was blessed by a fellow Yount collector, Matt, he sent me two huge boxes of Robin Yount cards, both graded and ungraded. You can read that post here from 2011. Needless to say it was one of the greatest gifts I've ever been given in my collecting career. It's also one of the reasons I also try and put a little extra into every trade package I send. As I've been revamping The Yount Collector, those gifts will be popping up from time to time, especially all the great graded cards I received.

But first I want to feature one more graded card I picked up way back at the dawn of this blog. This card goes with the Graded 1987 Topps I posted about earlier. At the time I was looking to improve the collection and one way I wanted to improve it was to get some quality slabbed cards. Sure I'd already have tens if not hundreds of a lot of these cards, but getting one graded was another story.  My quest didn't last too long. I can't really remember how many graded Younts I picked up in total, but this 1982 SGC graded one is another I remember very clearly.  I originally posted about it way back near the dawn of the blog, here.

I looked for a cheap PSA card and finding none I settled for this 88 SGC. I really like the way the card looks in the slab. SGC has the nice cut outs for the corners and the black insert really makes the card stand out.

When I saw the checklist of 2013 Topps Update I was pretty excited to see Robin had a coin card this years set

While I hate that Topps calls these relics they are pretty sweet cards.  

I had been watching just about every one of these copper level coin cards on ebay that have been up for auction. I was biding my time.  I finally was able to snag one for a decent price.  Still it was more than I really wanted to spend on the card, but there comes a time when sellers stop putting these up for 99 cents and letting the market determine final price and just start listing them as Buy It Now with insane price tags. 

I will say this it's a great card. It's super heavy. The coin is solid and the card looks amazing in hand.  There are two more levels of coin cards the Wrought Iron and Steel, numbered to 50 and 10, but I'm not really worried about them, if I can find either at a great price I'll bite, but I'm glad to have at least this great tribute in the collection now.

The theme of the Coins is Pennant Chase and this coin commemorates the 1982 World Series team that lost to the Cardinals in seven. Sadly the one and only time the team made it.
