 Robin doesn't get many relic cards anymore.  I'm assuming that's because most of his jersey were already cut up in the early 2000s.  But he is in the Jersey Kings relic set (and parallels) in this year's Diamond Kings.

Continuing through my stack of new Yount cards from my recent COMC delivery.  Next up we have Robin's Red Framed All Time Diamond Kings insert card from 2020 Diamond Kings.  If the image looks familiar it's because it's the same one featured from the last card I posted about his 2020 Donruss card.  I'll be honest this card does not flow well.  The yellow background and red border clash terribly.  But I do like the effect the raised frame gives to the card.   

And like most Panini products the back features a small canned blurb, but not much else.

 

On the Radar - 2021 Panini Diamond Kings

This year Paul Molitor take the position of retro Brewers player that's getting most of the love from Panini, but Robin is featured in one of the inserts sets in this year's Diamond Kings.  Robin has a quad relic autograph card and it's parallels to chase.

I featured Robin's red bordered parallel of this card a few weeks ago.  I always find it interesting when I realize that I missed picking up a base card for year's.  To be fair I've had Robin's other card in this set for years, card #HH-61 with the color image.  I'm not sure why Donruss went and featured a bunch of players in the same set with this sepia or black and white version as well.  Most likely to add bulk to the set.  More cards you make the more you can sell.  And like his HH-61 there are plenty of parallels to chase.  Some as simple as the framed borders to auto-relics.

You would think working from home during this COVID-19 pandemic would lead to more blog posts, but I work 10 hour days so after I'm done doing what I can I really don't want to be on the computer anymore.  Ahem.  I'm fine, how are you all doing?

Next up, and I can't believe I'm still working through my Black Friday COMC haul pick ups, is Robin's 2005 Donruss Diamond Kings red framed HOF Heroes HOF-86.  Robin has two cards in this set and besides the different card numbering the image is different.  This card has a Sepia or Black and White, it's hard to tell, image.

COMC Black Friday Haul #29

For those who weren't collecting in 2003-2005 it was the height of sets produced for baseball products (and other sports).  While the late 80's and early 90's saw the height of the junk was era, the mid-2000's saw hundreds and hundreds of different sets being produced.  It should come as no surprise that 2005 was also the year that the most Robin Yount cards were produced, with over 1000 being produced.

While that may seem daunting to a player collector I've long since come to terms that I'll never own every Yount card.  But for me the chase is where the enjoyment comes in and 2005 has a lot to hunt.

Point in case is this card.  I already had the relic version of this card, but the base card has eluded me til now.  Actually it's probably elude me simply because I hadn't been bothered to chase after it, but it popped up for sale during the Black Friday event at COMC.  The card commemorates Lyle's achievement of surpassing Robin as the Brewers single season HR leader.

Continuing with my 2018 Black Friday haul from COMC is the rarest of the Younts I picked up over that last year.  I actually bought this one way back in February.  It was hard to pass up for a little over $3.  The sapphire parallel numbered to only 25 is the only parallel for this set and the blue foil really pops in hand and doesn't look to bad scanned as well.  I'm surprised I found a copy of this card at all, let alone for so cheap.  And I'm really glad I was able to add this one to the collection.

I'm a huge fan of the classic Diamond Kings.  Dick Perez is a giant among sports artists and has been a staple in trading cards for decades.  All the 1984 Diamond Kings have this early printing error where the Perez-Steele Galleries was missing the E in Steele.  Minor, forgettable, but none the less a corrected error. In the days where inserts were rare and long before relics and autographed cards these cards commanded a little more dinero.  Overall this is one of my favorite Diamond Kings designs and a great looking card. Even if it's missing an E.

We are getting close to the end of my COMC Black Friday deliverys.  Only one more card after this.  

This is my first Diamond King out of the set.  The Blue parallel is right in the middle of rarity with the color parallels and oddly enough I still haven't found a reasonably priced unnumbered base card to add to the collection.  All of the colored parallels look really good.  I really like the looks of the green and gold parallels, but the blue really pops as well.

Still have a few Younts left from my Black Friday shipment.  Next up is a great insert from last year's Diamond Kings.  I bought a couple packs hoping I might just luck into this card, but in the end I found a cheap one on COMC.  And then not to long ago I also received one in a trade package from Julie who write the blog A Cracked Bat.  In the age of all these low numbered auto relics that I have no chance of picking up I love that Robin gets included in sets like this and he rightfully deserves to be there.

Maybe it's just me, but I love getting new Yount cards. And I'm not talking about autos and relics.  I'm talking about just a nice plain old insert like this one here.  Sure it doesn't have logos and Robin's photo is in black and white, which is probably better then having to look at the terrible photoshop colors Panini changes the uniforms to.

Overall a pretty appealing card the gold foil works well with the dark card.

2016 Panini Diamond Kings Yount Checklist and Gallery

2005 Donruss Diamond Kings Team Timeline Dual relic with Lyle Overbay

It was fun to watch Lyle come back to Milwaukee in 2014 for his last season even if the 2014 season ended horribly for the team.  Lyle originally played for the Brewers in 2004 and 2005 and here he gets paired with Robin Yount for the 2005 Team Timelines insert.  A nice double relic even if both swatches are kind of boring.  Like all insert in Diamond Kings there are multiple parallels of this card.  With a base version, this jersey relic version, a bat relic version and a prime jersey version.  

2005 Donruss Studio Portraits Gray Border "White" Diamond Kings back

In 2005 Donruss and Upper Deck were competing to see which company could produce the set with the most confusing and numerous parallels and inserts.  Upper Deck put up a good fight, but in the end I think Donruss won hands down with sets like this and Diamond Kings.  Studio Portraits was an insert to Donruss' popular Studio brand.  The old Studio sets are still some of my favorites from the early 90's.  

The insert features a very nice photo of Robin.  The parallels, I'm not sure if there is a base insert, feature various border colors and photo effects.  To make it more interesting there is also an advertising variation on the backs.  Donruss put their various brand logos on the backs.  This grey border card has the Diamond Kings logo.  It's possible this is also called the white border, I'm not sure it's a super confusing set.  To make matters worse many of the cards are very low numbered.  My example here being numbered to just 60.  To make matters worse I don't think the whole checklist is paralleled.

While the set is confusing and frustrating I'm still glad things like this exist out there for me to hunt and find.
