On the Radar - 2021 Topps Now Turn Back the Clock

I posted a card earlier today, hoping I wouldn't jinx it and I was rewarded but Topps actually producing this card finally.  I had hoped this would have come out last year on Sept 9th, the date Robin hit his 3000th hit back in 1992.  If you hurry you can get one, this one's only available for 24 hours off of Topps' website.  There is also a chance for a a couple super rare parallels.  Squeeeeeeeee!  I'll update with PR total when it's released.

2009 Upper Deck 20th Anniversary Retrospective #1299

Year: 2009
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: 20th Anniversary Retrospective
Card Number: 1299
Card Type: Base

Today marks a milestone anniversary for Robin Yount.  On this day in 1992 Robin hit his 3000th hit and pretty much assured himself a place in Canton.  Topps has been putting out a retro Topps Now Turn Back the Clock set for a few months now and so far has only featured one Brewers, CC Sabathia.  My hope was today Topps would honor him in the set.  But alas they didn't, so let's honor him here.  Over the years Robin has been featured on many, many cards celebrating the 3000 hit milestone.  It took me a minute to find one I hadn't yet featured and had queued up.
So today we have one of five cards featuring Robin in the massive 2500 card 2009 UD 20th Anniv. Retrospective set.  To be fair the set is kind of boring and all 5 of Yount's cards use the same photo with different captions at the bottom and small write-ups on the back.

2016 Topps Update Yount Checklist and Gallery

While the Milwaukee Brewers only have 6 base cards in the set and most of the inserts feature Ryan Braun, Robin does have 5 cards to chase.  From the fairly easy to get 3000 Hits Club base inserts and the unnumbered Medallion parallel card, to much more limited Medallion parallels and the autographed version.  These have been added too Robin's running 2016 checklist bring up the total to 158, not counting all the 5x7 card sets, I'll try to track those all down later to add.

Here is the checklist and image gallery

Once in a lifetime Yount Auction

I posted about this earlier, but SCP Auctions now has a preview up of all 72 items that will be at auction starting Wednesday.  There is a lot of cool stuff to see even if you're just window shopping like me.  I'm going to be out of town for a work trip while the auction is open, but I do plan on doing a very indepth look at the items and what they sell for.

The highlight has to be both Robin's 3000th bat and ball, both of which have very respectable starting prices.

1992 Sentry SGA Robin Yount Commemorative 3000th Hit card set - 3000th Hit card

Year: 1992
Set: Sentry Foods Robin Yount Commemorative 3000th Hit SGA
Card Number: NNO - 3000th Hit

Here we are at the end of the road for this great set.  The final card in the commemorative set obviously celebrates the great milestone and the Hall of Fame entry ticket.  As a matter of fact every member of the 3000th Hit club is in the Hall of Fame with the exception of 4.  Pete Rose, because he's ineligible, Raphael Palmeiro, probably because of his alleged PED use, Derek Jeter, because he's not eligible yet, and we all know Jeter will be a first ballot guy, and Alex Rodriguez because he's still playing and may not get in due to PED use.

Robin had tons of other accomplishments that garner his admission into the Hall, but being part of the 3000th hit club is like no other, well maybe the 700 HR club.  Robin wouldn't stop at 3000 either he'd go on to add 142 more before calling it quits.  And his milestone came almost exactly 6 years from reaching 2000.  Robin became the 3rd youngest player to reach the milestone and still is, but Jeter made it to #4 back in 2011.

Over all it's a great 4 card set.  Great design, great photos, nice information on the back.  And they're not that rare.  20,000 were given out on Sept. 25, 1992 which back in the 90's made it rare, today not so much.  The Standard Catalog prices the set, at least back in 2011 at about $15, but I would suspect you can find this set for closer to $5 or cheaper.  Well worth adding to a Yount card collection.

1992 Sentry SGA Robin Yount Comememorative 3000th Hit Card Set - 2000th Hit card

Year: 1992
Set: Sentry Foods Robin Yount Commemorative 3000th Hit SGA
Card Number: NNO - 2000th Hit

Happy Valentines Day!

The third card from this four card set celebrates of course the next milestone in Robin's chase for 3000 hits, his 2000th hit.  Which happened just over 6 years from him reaching 1000 hits and just over 12 years from his first hit.  He would also become the first Brewer in the young franchises history to record that mark.

Again I love the photo selection for this card.  A crisp photo of Robin in full swing and Brewer's pinstripes.

1992 Sentry SGA Robin Yount 3000th Hit Commemorative Card Set - 1000th Hit card

Year: 1992
Set: Sentry Foods Robin Yount Commemorate 3000th Hit SGA
Card Number: NNO - 1000th Hit

The next card in this great stadium giveaway is Robin's 1000th Hit card.  The hit came in August, 1980.  I little over 6 years from his first and Robin would add an additional 1000 hits just about every 6 years after that too.  For a stadium giveaway the set and the cards are very well done.  I think the backs could have been given a little more attention, but the write up on the back is great and the overall layout on the front is very appealing. I also like the photo selection for the cards.  In the first card we get a classic 1970's Yount and here we get that classic early 80's baby blue uniform and with Robin base running with a well used batting helmet.

1992 Sentry SGA Commemorative Card Set - First Hit card

Year: 1992
Set: Sentry Foods Robin Yount 3000th Hit Commemorative SGA Set
Card Number: NNO - First Hit

Sentry Foods and the Brewers have a long history of sponsored giveaways in the 90's.  There are quite a few stadium giveaways or SGA's from that time that Robin has cards in.  I'm slowly working on getting those sets in the Trading Card Database, but I just recently added my favorite set of the bunch, the one that features only him and celebrates his 3000th hit.

According to the Standard Catalog these were given out to the first 20,000 through the gate on September 25th, 1992.  Just over two weeks from when Robin got his 3000th hit.  There are 4 cards to the set.  They came in a little envelope, I have scans of it below.  None of the cards are numbered instead each card celebrates a milestone on the road to Robin's 3000th hit.  The first card in the series celebrates Robin's first hit in April of 1974.  I was almost a year old.

Robin would also go on to get his first career home run in that game.

1992 3000th Hit certificate and used ticket stub.

Year: 1992
What: Robin Yount's 3000th Hit I was there certificate and used ticket stub.

No I wasn't at the game.  I picked this up years ago for a really good price.  I look around now and people want all sorts of crazy money for these certificates.  I also like that it came with a used ticket stub.  Under the ticket it actually says put your stub here.

It's a cool memento, I wonder how these were distributed, if you had to come back or if the Brewers already had these printed up for multiple days, I mean I'm sure you could ballpark when it was going to happen, but nothing's given for an achievement like this.  You also get some nice facsimile autos for Robin and Bud Selig.

I've read that these were sold after the event as well and some even have phantom unused tickets.  I can't be sure, but I like believe this was one given out after the game, I mean that's a used ticket right there.  And wow a whole $7 dollars.  Those were the tickets I use to buy on the rare occasions when I was in college and got to go to a game.
