Been a while since I featured a card from the collection.  I'm fairly sure this was a COMC purchased card.   One of the feats that can almost guarantee a player entrance into the Hall of Fame is reaching the 3000 hits mark.  Getting 3000 hits usually takes a long time even for a proficient hitter and Robin did it in 1992, his 19th year in the majors.  The cards is beautiful and shiny, you know how I like my shiny cards and numbered to 149 copies.

I've found as a player collector, especially retired HOF players, you either love the fact that the card manufacturers feature you player or you don't.  I'm on the love it side.  For me it's the hunt and of course the collecting aspect.  I long ago gave up the notion that I'd ever be able to collect all the cards of Robin, but my general mind set is that while I may never be able to catch'em all, all are welcome in the collection if I was ever able to find them.  If that makes sense.  

Ahem anyways 2024 Donruss is a set that only features retired player and prospects.  No active players so that means you get all retired and HOFer's to fill out the set.  And of course the insane amount of parallels that are included, plus instead of being a stand alone product Panini has included Optic parallels to chase.  Many of the parallels are unnumbered, but there are of course plenty that are.  The Red, or rather Red Holofoil, parallels are numbered to just 275.

 I got my COMC order a few weeks ago. It had been about a year since my last shipment and the order had over 300 cards in it.  And of course a ton of new Younts to add to the collection.

First up out of that haul is this 2023 Donruss America Parallel.  Panini over the last few year's has become the king of parallels.  The last couple of years has seen Panini do a bunch of emoji style parallels.  Not a bad pick up these America parallels that feature border full of United States emojis all over it and are numbered to just 50.  Since the cards are numbered on the front the backs of all these parallels is identical to the base card.

 Wow it feels like just a slug of new products that have Yount cards in them.  I'm interested to see when the Stadium Club checklist is released if Robin has cards in that set as well.  I'll correct the card numbers and add images once stuff starts showing up.

Another pick up from my latest COMC delivery (see past posts for more details).  2005 is the year that keeps on giving, or at least will be the year that I'll always be able to find something I'm missing.  Not hard when Robin had over 1000 cards produced with his likeness that year.  The legendary series features a few different relics, but the overall theme is the base cards, while low numbered, are still for the design which has relic, auto, and relic auto versions.

 

On the Radar - 2021 Panini Donruss Optic Baseball - Yount Checklist

 Robin didn't have a single card in this year's Donruss release, but is featured in the Panini equivilant of Topps Chrome.  Robin has a signature in the Retro Signature Series set and 3 very low numbered parallels.

2004 Donruss Classics - Legendary Jackets

Continuing my posts about my recent COMC delivery, let's go back a few year's to the age of insane set parallels.  While 2005 might be the peak of crazy, parallel heavy sets, 2004 gives it a good run.  And the 2004 Classics set is a great example.  It's also a great set if you collect HOF players as they are crammed into this set and Robin is no exception.  Just looking at the checklist for this set, Robin and Paul Molitor are all over this set, various insert sets and parallels.

One of the odder and rarer of the inserts is this Legendary Jackets insert.  All the Legendary inserts look similar with this basic design.  The Legendary Jackets set has a base run of only 50 cards and features 60 HOFers.  There is a relic version of this card, but that set only features 6 players out of the base set and Robin isn't one of them.  Overall this insert and it's cousins look like a lot of inserts there were designed to also be used in the relic, autograph, and auto relic parallels.  And too be honest the insert feels clunky and pointless.  The blurb on the back doesn't help define what Donruss was trying to do with this set, but the overall goal I think was to be able to put out different kinds of relics, this one featuring bits of player worn jackets, but with a relic run only covering 10% of the base checklist it seems almost pointless.  But that seems to sum up a lot of the inserts from this time frame.

Nothing says Panini more than that big blue helmet without a logo.  That being said this Holo Orange prizm is nice and sparkly (which doesn't come out in the scan).  The thing that makes me giggle them most is the small blurb on the back talking about Robin's bobblehead giveway from 2014.

2005 Donruss Throwback Threads Polo Grounds Long Fly to Right Field Out - Strike

2005, as I seem to say again and again, currently holds the record for the year with the most cards produced for Robin.  And it's cards like this one that are the reason.  This Polo Grounds game insert, pays homage to the 1914 Polo Grounds game cards. This set has 45 parallels total, with the highest serial numbered to just 85.  This card is part of the Strike Long Fly out numbered to 50 parallel.  I can remember when these came out and chasing a few of the parallels.  Nowadays these are pretty easy to find even if they are very low numbered.  While some of the really low numbered cards can set you back most of these can be had relatively cheap, relatively.  

1990 Donruss Variations

 I have to say, maybe it's because I opened so much of this product, but 1990 Donruss is one of my least favorite sets of all time.  I lovingly refer to this set as the vomit set.  The color variations used for the Best of the NL and AL sets helped, but the base red just, well it gets old.  That being said like sets previous and after there are a few variations to look for, if you're into that.  

Again this year has the missing period after the INC in the copyright. 

I looked through my stack of 1990 Yount cards and I found both the INC. and INC pretty equally distributed through my stack.

And another reoccurring theme is a slight difference between the wax pack cards and the ones printed for the factory set.  This time it's an almost imperceivable difference in the splattering on the border on the front of the card.  Here have a look.

I literally was driving myself batty on TCDB.com trying to figure out what the difference was until I had to do a google search about the difference, but once you see it, it is there. 

1989 Donruss Variations

 Since Robin isn't featured in this year's Donruss and I thought I'd start wading into the plethora of Donruss variations the have been documented over on the Trading Card Database.  So far the variations have been cataloged from 1987 to 1992 and Robin has variations in each set.

I decided to start with the four variations in the 1989 set because they are fairly straight forward and as you will see pretty minute. 

All the variations have to do with omissions and additions on the back of the card.  

The first variation has to do with the copyright line.  The INC can either have a period after the INC or it's absent.  The second variation can be found just below that on the Denotes Led League.  Denotes will either have an one asterisk before Denotes or it will have an asterisk before and after Denotes.  So the four variations are:

1. INC.  *Denotes

2. INC *Denotes (no period after the INC)

3. INC. *Denotes*

4. INC *Denotes* (no period after the INC)

Examples of each are below.

The fact that I don't remember this being a big deal back in 88 says a lot for how minor the variations are.  I also have no idea on rarity between the different variations.  Although looking through my stack of 88 Younts the missing period with *Denotes was the toughest to find.  

Since the diligent members of the TCDB went through the trouble of documenting all these variations in the various sets, I figure it's the least I can do to disseminate them here and also check my collection to see if I have them all.  S

2008 Donruss Threads - Century Proof Green

Donruss' last hurrah.  I have no idea why I really like this set.  Maybe it's because Donruss got away with what almost bankrupted Upper Deck.  This is an unlicensed set, but you can clearly see logos.  Sure not full logos, no team names, but still Robin's not airbrushed.  Maybe I like this set because Robin's all over it.  Relics, autographs, insert, parallels.  There's lots to chase in this set and I did.  There are 4 parallels for this set, Gold, Green, Platinum, and Silver Century Proofs.  The Green Century Proof Parallels are the most common being numbered to just 250.  Plus the Century Proofs are shiny and I do love shiny cards.  In 2009 Donruss, and all of it's acquired brands with it, would be bought by Panini and well you know how it is now.

2020 Donruss Optic Yount Checklist

Robin along with Paul Molitor grace the Retro 86 insert set again in the chromy version of Donruss.  There are only 3 parallels to chase, but two of them are super rare.

2003 Donruss Timeless Treasures HOF Materials Jersey Relic

In 2003 there were almost 100 different baseball card releases. And that's a lot of sets, but what made this year and the next couple so crazy was the explosion of parallels within the sets, inserts, relic, autograph, and relic autograph cards.  Robin has 16 different cards in this set with all the parallels.  He also happens to two cards in the HOF Materials insert set.  He's also featured on card #HOF-18 with a bat relic.  But what is really great about this set and especially this card is the jersey that this swatch is taken from is featured and fully recognized as the source on the back of the card.  Something that is sorely missing in today's, not from any specific event, date, or game,  relic cards.  The card features a very young, maybe still in his teens, Yount in batting pose, although very little of him.  Still this is from a time where relics were still a pretty sought after hit in products and with both his relics in this set being numbered to only 100 fairly rare.  

1991 Studio

In 1991 the trading card market was starting to get crowded.  Not as crowded as it would be come by the mid to late 90s and early 2000s, but the writing was on the wall and the race for innovation was on.  Fleer and Donruss were still playing catch up into the more premium card market that Upper Deck launched in 1989 and Topps countered with Stadium Club.  In 1991 Fleer would launch Ultra and Donruss gave us Studio.  Studio was meant to be a stately set.  A throwback to the cabinet cards of the turn of the century.  And Donruss did a pretty good job with this inaugural issue.  The magenta borders work well with the black and white photos and there is a nice write up on the back.  The 1992 issue was a step backward for the set and wasn't a great follow-up to this first set, but in 1993 Donruss really stepped up there game with a glossy finish and holofoil and never looked back putting out some pretty nice versions of this set.  In 1991 this was all you got.  Just a really nice base set, no foil or color parallels, absolutely no autographs or relics, just the standard puzzle piece insert for the black and white Rod Carew.

I featured Robin's red bordered parallel of this card a few weeks ago.  I always find it interesting when I realize that I missed picking up a base card for year's.  To be fair I've had Robin's other card in this set for years, card #HH-61 with the color image.  I'm not sure why Donruss went and featured a bunch of players in the same set with this sepia or black and white version as well.  Most likely to add bulk to the set.  More cards you make the more you can sell.  And like his HH-61 there are plenty of parallels to chase.  Some as simple as the framed borders to auto-relics.

COMC Black Friday Haul #49

Another Donruss set with a lot of inserts and insert parallels.  In the Donruss Classics product was the Legendary inserts.  These inserts were called things like Legendary Jackets, Legendary Jerseys, Legendary Leather...you get the picture.  Every set had a non-relic base cards.  That had a low serial numbered print run and then at least one relic parallel, sometime many, many more.  I've had a few of these for a while, but being low numbered they don't pop up that often and a lot of times people want way more than I'm willing to pay for them.  But then sometimes you get lucky.  As a matter of fact sometime really lucky as I picked this card up for just over a dollar, it's another one of those cards I didn't get during the Black Friday sales event, but rather a random pick up mid-year.  While I love the two big events the COMC has, the Spring Cleaning sale and Black Friday, I'm always on the hunt on the website.

COMC Black Friday Haul #47

I posted about 2005 a lot over the years.  Mainly because Robin has a lot of cards from 2005.  As a matter of fact the most cards every produced for Robin were in 2005 with what I estimated to be right around 1000.  You can see the Yount-o-graph I did year's ago here.  I should update that.

Anyways one of the main reasons Robin has so many cards from 2005 was the fact that a lot of the insert sets he was included in had a gazillion parallels.  Case in point is 2005 Donruss Studios Portraits insert, it has over 50 different parallels.  All serial numbered, all barely different.  A lot has to do the with advertising on the back but also the border color, the photo color and the serial numbering.  But with so many to chase when one pops up on COMC and for a decent price I usually will pick it up.  

The Portraits set was a nod to the cabinet cards from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Although I'm at a loss if it was directly modeled after one particular set.  Maybe someone out there knows?

Anyways it's a great card from the last set of Donruss Studio that was issued before Donruss-Playoff lost their MLB license.
