2025 Topps Series 1 is close at hand.  Topps has released the checklist, although the base set is unnumbered.  The 35th Anniversary set is 1990 Topps and Robin has a card in that checklist, as well all the parallels and chrome parallels and autos.

1990 Donruss Variations

I have to say, maybe it's because I opened so much of this product, but 1990 Donruss is one of my least favorite sets of all time.  I lovingly refer to this set as the vomit set.  The color variations used for the Best of the NL and AL sets helped, but the base red just, well it gets old.  That being said like sets previous and after there are a few variations to look for, if you're into that.

Again this year has the missing period after the INC in the copyright.

I looked through my stack of 1990 Yount cards and I found both the INC. and INC pretty equally distributed through my stack.

And another reoccurring theme is a slight difference between the wax pack cards and the ones printed for the factory set.  This time it's an almost imperceivable difference in the splattering on the border on the front of the card.  Here have a look.

The card on the right is the factory set card
The card on the right in this picture is also the factory set card

I literally was driving myself batty on TCDB.com trying to figure out what the difference was until I had to do a google search about the difference, but once you see it, it is there.

1990 Topps Career Batting Leaders

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Topps Flagship
Card Number: 15
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Career Batting Leaders

Distributed as an exclusive insert to the K-Mart 100 card blister packs these Career Batting Leader cards are not all that easy to find.  Robin's 1990 card features the exact same photo and layout as his 1989 K-Mart card, except in red.  I found this well loved copy in the 50 cent box at Don's Sportcards, one of my LCS', here in Anchorage, Alaska.  The bottom part of the card has some issues, but I knew I didn't have a copy of this card or it's 1989 twin so picking it up for a couple quarters was an easy decision.

1990 Score Superstar PSA graded 10

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Score
Card Set: Score Superstars Box Set
Card Number: 92
Card Attributes: Graded
Grading Company: PSA
Grade: Gem Mint 10

Over the years I've never really gotten into graded cards.   I can count on one hand the number of graded cards I've actually purchased, but quite a few year's ago a fellow Yount collector, Matt,  sent me a ton graded Younts while trying to pare down his collection.  Matt has the highest ranking Yount collection on the PSA registry and about a decade ago he contacted me asking if I'd like some of his extras that didn't make the grade for his registry set.  Not to look a gift horse in the mouth I graciously accepted and 99% of the graded Yount cards in my collection have come from him.  The cards he sent were all in beautiful shape, but most did not make the grade to gem mint 10.  However mixed in the lots were a couple cards that did.  One of those cards was this 1990 Score Superstars.

The 1990 Superstars set was a box set of 100 cards.  It's about the size of the old Topps Traded sets. And like all sets from this era it was grossly overproduced, however the nice thing about the box sets from the 80s and 90s is they are chocked full of superstars and now HOFers.

1990 Brewers Pocket Schedule - Miller High Life

Year: 1990
What: Brewers Pocket Schedule - Miller High Life ad.

I was recently contacted by Dennis over at Too Many Verlanders and he asked if I wanted some random Brewers cards.  I can't so no that so a couple days ago a nice think package arrived loaded with random Brewers cards.  There were a smattering of junk wax and some modern stuff, most of the card I already had in my collection, but there were a couple new additions.  But the cherry on top was adding a new Yount collectible to the collection.

I already had one of these 1990 pocket schedules and featured it here a couple years ago.  But there are multiple variations of the schedule with different ads featured in the middle panel.  This one happens to be the fairly common Miller High Life ad variation.  The schedule itself was in pristine condition looking like it was just put out for the taking.  A great addition to the collection.  Thanks again Dennis.

1990 Bowman Art Card Variation

Year: 1990
Manufacture: Topps
Set: Bowman
Card Number: NNO
Card Type: Insert
Insert: Art Card contest

There recently was a thread going on over at the TCDB about single and double asterisk variations on the 1990 Bowman Art Card Contest Cards.  The overall discussion was iablout if this a parallel or just a variation?  I think in the end the cards were listed as a parallel and it's own separate set.  After doing a little research I've found out that this variations, err, or parallel was pretty prevalent through out a lot of Topps sets, especially their non-sport sets.  The asterisks has to do with printing and printing plate designations, of which I'm still not sure I fully understand.  I will say that as far as Robin goes the other card I know that this affects is his 1977 cloth sticker.

Regardless the difference is small and fairly minor, but for completists I'm pointing this out, because it's most likely you already have both versions in your collection, like I did.

1990 Topps Glossy Send In

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Glossy All-Stars and Hot Prospects Send Ins
Card Number: 15

For many year's Topps offered a couple different special offer send in sets advertised on cards inserted into wax packs.  What always bothered me was that these cards were inserted in the middle of the packs instead of as the last card in the pack that would have eliminated the wax backs.  Ahem.
Anyways as a collector of the Yount cards once you get to over 1000 different cards you get to the point where you have most of the base cards and most inserts and oddballs from his playing days.

I recently completed a huge 1000+ Brewer card trade with a fellow card collector named Mark off of Twitter.  He sent me a flat rate box full of Brewers cards and I sent him back a box full of Red Sox.  After a couple days of sorting and inventorying I ended up adding almost 200 new Brewers cards to the collection.  Included in the lot was over 200 Yount cards.  And as luck would have it I found one I needed.  This 1990 Glossy All Star Send In.  It's funny because as I've been slowly inventorying my Yount collection and adding it to the Trading Card Database I realized I didn't have a copy of this card.  That kind of surprised me and I added it to my want list and figured I'd pick up a copy off of COMC or somewhere else eventually, well looks like I don't need to.

1990 Topps Sticker

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Stickers
Card Number: 54
Card Type: Base

The 1990 Topps Sticker set is interesting, especially from a checklist stand point.  The base card which I consider the player superstar side with stats to be the primary player for the card.  Especially since he's the only player named on the card or sticker.  Then the back or front depends on how you look at the cards featured either one, or what was more common in the set, two smaller stickers, which were also numbered, but the players were not identified.  The two players also featured on the card are Mike LaValliere on sticker #133 and Greg Swindell on sticker 214.

All About the Base - 1990 Topps All-Star

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 389
Card Type: Base Sub-set

Robin got two base cards in the 1990 set.  While the Topps set didn't have a dedicated MVP card for Robin, which is a shame, it did do these All-Star cards.  Interestingly Robin wasn't an All-Star in 1989, so this card is a little misleading.  However this card does celebrate Robin being a Top 5 Hit Leader in the American League.

The 1990 set is still one of my favorite designs.

All About the Base - 1990 Topps

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 290
Card Type: Base

Just got back from a two week trip to Wisconsin.  Got to see the Brewers lose to the Cubs in Milwaukee and got to eat a lot of fried food.  But I'm back and we are close to the end of this round of All About the Base.

1990's Topps is one of my all time favorite sets.  Sure it's smack dab in the middle of the Junk Wax Era, but man compare it to the other 1990 offerings this set stood out.  Hell this set would stand out in almost any era.  On top of that we get a great photo of Robin with a huge cheese eating grin relaxing at the ball field.  And in 1990 Robin had a lot to smile about.  He'd just won his second MVP award the previous year and while his 89 season wasn't his best it was still damn good for the elder statesman.

Now there's no room on the back of his Topps cards for anything other than career stats.

1990 Miller High Life SGA

Year: 1990
Card Manufacturer: Miller Brewing
Card Set: Miller High Life Brewers Stadium Giveaway Set
Card Number: NNO (31 in a set of 32)
Card Type: Stadium Giveaway

The Standard Catalog states that this card was part of a 32 card set and collector album given away at an August Brewers game in 1990.  Interestingly enough I had read somewhere that the High Life name was actually a brand of cigars and that Miller bought the name to use for the beer. That was a long time ago and High Life is Miller's oldest brand still being produced today, it was also one of the first beers to be packaged and sold in individual bottles.  To be honest I've lost track of who owns Miller now.  I think MolsonCoors does, but that could have changed by now.

In hand these are great looking cards for a SGA.  Simple design, but full stats on the back.  Gotta love that.  Plus it's beer themed!

1990 Panini Sticker

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Panini
Set: Panini Baseball Stickers
Card Number: 92
Card Type: Base

We all might think of Panini as one of the big three in terms of sport card manufacturers now, but back before they bought Donruss they were pretty much only known in the US for their stickers and sticker albums.

A nice action shot of Robin running the bases.  Overall the design is nice and simple.  Nothing really interesting on the back, because after all this was a sticker.  And sticker backs get thrown away once the sticker is peeled.

1990 Ames Department Store Box Set

Year: 1990
Card Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Ames Department Store Box set
Card Number: 5
Card Type: Base
Set Type: Box set

The late 80's and early 90's saw a ton of these small box sets.  The nice thing about these sets is they featured all the great players at the time.  So even though they were overproduced they were decent quality and were a cheap way to pick up some cards of your favorite players.

Ames was a department store chain based on the East Coast that officially ceased business in 2002.  But they, like a lot of their competators, got caught up in the box set craze of the time.  Ames put out two sets.  One in 1989 that featured the 20/20 players and this set put out in 1990 featuring the top active career leaders in runs produced.  And luckily we get a nice Robin Yount card out of the deal.  These cards are the stuff of dime boxes and repacks now and could easily set you back a whole nickel if you try.  But not a bad looking card and a great set with a great checklist.

1990 Upper Deck Brewers Checklist

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Flagship Baseball
Card Number: 91
Card Type: Base, Checklist

It's hard to believe it's already been 6 years since Upper Deck put out a baseball set.  Let's time warp back and visit the second set Upper Deck put out.  In the 1990 set beside the main checklist cards found every at all the 100's each team got a team checklist card featuring a star player from the team.  The cards were illustrated by famed sports artist Vernon Wells.  He also did a lot if not all of the insert illustrations.  It was Upper Deck's answer to Donruss' Dick Perez stuff.

1990 Bowman Art Card Contest

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Bowman Baseball
Card Type: Contest Insert
Card Number: NNO

If you opened packs of 1990 Bowman, which was slightly better than the oversized 1989 Bowman only because it stored better, you got a ton of these contest inserts.  Well before the days of the internet when you still had to fill out the lines on the back of this card and mail it in.  The prize for this contest was a complete set of the 11 lithographs.  A total of 500 lithograph sets were produced.  250 were given away as prizes and the rest were offered to hobby dealers.  All the lithos are artist signed and numbered.  You can see my Yount litho here.  Seems in that post I may or may not have gotten the total produced wrong.  Back in the day this kind of counted as an insert and while common is still kind of neat.

1990 Bowman

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Bowman Baseball
Card Number: 404
Card Type: Base

I can remember when Topps resurrected the Bowman brand in 1989 it was a big deal.  Now we had two sets to chase. And yes if you had a little extra money you could go after the premium Stadium Club.  This was the start of what we have today with lots and lots of sets, but not as many as the mid 2000's.  Bowman had pretty much been extinct since Topps bought them out in 1956 and later Topps would rebrand Bowman as its premier prospects and rookies set.  In 1989 Topps also issued the cards with the original Bowman dimensions.  Which was neat, but a huge pain in the ass for collector's to store.  So in 1990 Topps just went back to the regular 2x3 dimensions.  This year's set was definitely all about the player.  Huge photo, minimal logo and wordage, same super crowded back.  The rainbow borders are a bit distracting and  remind me of Mork and Mindy, which was still in heavy syndication in 1990.  Overall still a great card and set and like everything from 1990 mega over produced so cards and sets are still super cheap.

1990 Post Cereal

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: MSA
Set: Post Cereal
Card Number: 26
Card Type: Base, Food Issue

For those that don't know Topps recently released a new food issue set.  I think this came as a surprise to just about everybody.  Topps and Wal-mart teamed up to offer a 50 card set available in specially marked packages of Wal-marts Marketside pizzas.  I do believe we are now calling this the Marketside set.  Overall the cards look ok, much better than any food issue in recent memory and with full logos, team names, and colors.  I think this gives hope that maybe food issue and oddballs might be making a comeback.  Given Wal-mart is a huge corporate entity and has teamed up with Topps on other Wal-mart only card exclusives, but there is hope for us oddball and food issue lovers.

And what better way to celebrate than with a 25 year old food issue from Post cereals.  One of the original food issue brands Post first put out a card set way back in 1961.  The mid-nineties would see a return of issued sets starting with this 1990 set and running through 1995 and would pop up again in 2001 and 2002.

Manufactured by MSA the cards feature players in all their air-brushy goodness.

1990 Donruss Rack Pack

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Donruss
What: 3 blister rack pack with Yount on top, middle.

I'm slowly building a nice cello collection.  Slowly is the keyword here, and nice is in the eye of the beholder.  I picked this rack pack up for less than a buck plus shipping.  Did I overpay for those 48 cards and 9 puzzle pieces, oh yeah.  But I get to add a new piece to the collection and a sub-collection.  Plus it also features Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemksy's puzzle card.  I will say that 90 Donruss is in the running for my least favorite set of all time.  I affectionately call this the puke set.  But I don't hate it, I don't hate any card set.  I lamented on my last rack pack post which was 1988 Topps that I had wished Robin had been in the center blister and here I wish he would have been on the end, but it is what it is.

1990 Upper Deck

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Flagship Baseball
Card Number: 567
Card Type: Base

Back to simpler times.  1990 would be Upper Decks second baseball set.  For a few years in a row Upper Decks sets all looked very similar.  A very nice clean, simple card for Robin.  And a nice large second photo on the back.  I do like that the front features a batting photo and the back a fielding. Plus holograms!!  Upper Deck didn't have to bother with filling up the back with words.   And you only got 5 years of stats, but really it was all about the pretty pictures those first couple of years.

1990 Brewers Pocket Schedule

Year:1990
What: Trifold Pocket Schedule w Car-X ad.

I ended up picking up a few more items for the collection from wfbookman's lasts big Yount auction from eBay.  First among those is this great 1990 tri-fold pocket schedule featuring the 1989 AL MVP.  Also featuring an ad for Car-X and a nice seating chart for the old County Stadium.  And if you want to know who the Brewers played and when in 1990 here you go.
