2006 UD SP Legendary Cuts - Place In History Signatures

Year: 2006
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: SP Legendary Cuts
Card Number: PH-RY
Card Type: Insert Autograph
Insert Set: Place in History Signatures
Card Attributes: Autographed, Serial numbered
Serial Number: 54/99

Very rarely do I walk into my LCS and walk out with a new autographed card that goes right into my Yount PC.  But last week it happened.

I wouldn't say my wife is supportive of my hobby, but she is very tolerant and to be fair that's good enough for me.  In return I've tried to curb my spending and follow our budget.  But I have made it a goal to try and acquire at least one new Yount auto a year.  Last year I unfortunately did not get to add one to the collection.  It's not that Robin doesn't have a ton of autographed cards to choose from and that there's not thousands up on ebay, but I had had my sights on the card that currently part of my blog header.  Robin's 2021 Topps Archives Fan Favorite.  But the card has been well out of my price range for the few that have come up for sale.  But luckily last week I stopped by Don's Sportcards here in Anchorage, Alaska.  Don has a corner in the store that he calls the Drop Zone.  He puts cards up with a price near, but below book value and then every week he takes a few bucks off the card until it can ultimately drop to $1.  I tend to peruse the boards looking for cheap trade bait to add to my trade box, but this beauty caught my eye -  Robin's 2006 UD SP Legendary Cuts Place in History Signatures autograph card numbered to 99.  Sure it's a sticker auto, but I can count the number of times on one hand I've found low numbered higher end Yount cards locally.  The best part is it cost me over half of what a Yount auto typically goes for.  But I'm going to count this as last year's autograph card I didn't get to pick up and hopefully I'll find the card I want this year.

2005 Upper Deck Reflections Blue

Year: 2005
Card Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Reflections
Card Number: 152
Card Type: Base Parallel
Parallel Set: Blue
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 07/75

Have I told you how much I've missed Upper Deck in the baseball card scene?  The very crowed card market of the early and mid 2000s saw lots of innovation and gimmicks to try and grab the attention of the average card collector.  Upper Deck's Reflections gimmick was that it was shiny or at least a lot of the inserts and parallels were shiny.  The product offers all the trappings we've come to expect out of a product, autographs, relics, relic autographs and of course base parallels.  Reflections offered 6 colored and shiny base parallels.

Here is Robin's blue parallel.  Numbered to only 75 it's got great eye appeal pairing well with his Brewers uniform.  The backs of the base card are pretty basic with just a line of total career stats and a small blurb.

2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes Light Blue Jersey Card

Year: 2008
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Baseball Heroes
Card Number: 99
Card Type: Parallel Relic
Parallel Set: Light Blue Jersey
Relic Type: Uniform
Card Attributes: Relic, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 127/200

Been awhile since I posted an actual Yount card.  I've been so busy keeping up with all the new cards coming out.  Let's go back to the well that is the 2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes set. Unlike the 2005 version that was HOF centric and that Robin had 5 cards in, in this set Robin has only one card.  Well that and a thousand parallels.  Just kidding of course, but there are a lot.  There are 10 base card color parallels alone, and then the relics, autos and relic autos that parallel the base set.  And while Robin isn't in very possible parallel, he is in a lot of them.

I'll be honest this set just screams 2008.  Well at least the way the just parallel the base set, by punching a hole for the relic and then applying sticker autos to the card.  That being said it's an overall nice card, the background works well with the very much on display classic Brewers uni.  And we get a nice posed Robin Yount in his later years.  And of course the plain gray swatch is totally 2000s.

2005 Upper Deck Classics Star Retro Rookies

Year: 2005
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Upper Deck Classics
Card Number: 124
Card Type: Base, Sub-set
Sub-set: Star Retro Rookies

I wonder if Panini has a solid TM on the term Classics now.  Seems like back in the late 90s and early 2000s everyone had a Classics set.  2005 also happens to be the year that there were over 1000 different Yount cards produced, this is just one.  Upper Deck put out a couple HOF and retro sets this year.  Robin has multiple cards to chase in the set from 3 base paralles to insert, relics and a couple autographs.

The photo used screams retro for sure.  Baby blue uni, check.  Flip up sunglasses, check.  Long wavy hair, check.  Pretty basic back with a small factoid, full career stats on one line and basic player info.

2008 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts - Legendary Memorabilia Blue Parallel Bat Relic

Year: 2008
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: SP Legendary Cuts
Card Number: LM-RY
Card Type: Insert Relic Color Parallel
Insert Set: Legendary Memorabilia Dark Blue
Relic Type: Bat
Card Attributes: Piece of Authentic, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 08/25

2008 holds the distinction of being the year in which the second most cards featuring Robin Yount were produced with 477.  Although 2020, did come close to beating it.  One of the reasons for the title is sets like Baseball Heroes and this set.  Robin is featured in the Legendary Memorabilia set.   A set with 10 different color variations to chase.

It might be tough to tell by looking at it but this is the dark blue color parallel.  It's a well laid out card with a nice big photo for Robin and a decent chunk of bat.  I also like that they designed in a nice little box for the serial number stamp, even if it looks like they couldn't hit it just right.

2005 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts Glory Days

Year: 2005
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: SP Legendary Cuts
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Glory Days
Card Number: GD-RY
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 382/399

Have I lamented recently how much I miss Upper Deck in baseball?  Let's go back to a time when the shelves were literally packed with product, back to 2005.
I've said it many times, 2005 has the distinction of being the year that Robin has the most cards produced with his likeness, more than 1000!!  And that has to do with sets like this. In this set alone Robin has close to 40 different cards to chase (that of course includes all the parallels).

And of course what was all the rage was having an insert set that had not only color parallels, but also autograph, relic and relic autograph parallels.

The base card for the Glory Days insert is numbered to only 399.  Again as was the tradition the overall design of the card is made to accommodate the autograph and relic parallels.  The autographed sticker would be placed where the team name is and the relic would be put where team logo is.

But the card does feature full career stats on the back and a nice little write up, something that is usually missing on similar card made today.

2005 Upper Deck All Star Classics - Legendary All-Stars

Year: 2005
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: All-Star Classics
Card Number: 96
Card Type: Base

Let's go back a few years.  Not all the way back to Robin's playing days instead we'll go back to the year that he had the most baseball cards produced with his likeness.  And that year is 2005.  2005 also marked one of the year's that the most baseball card products were produced.  At the time there were sets that were trying to hit all the marks and this set of course celebrates the mid-summer classic.  Not to be confused with Upper Deck Classics or Sweet Spot Classics or heaven forbid Donruss Classics, no this set featured players, both past and present, both active, retired, and HOFers.  It's a great set for baseball fans. Oddly no autographs to be found in the set.  The hits would have been two relics, one gold parallel (the only parallel set), and 5 inserts.  This product was also a retail exclusive.  Not much to chase for Yount fans other than his base card and gold parallel serial numbered to 499.  A Brewers fan favorite Robin only made the All-Star team 3 times in his 20 year career all in the early 80s.

2008 Upper Deck Goudey Mini Red Back

Year: 2008
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Goudey
Card Number: 214
Card Type: Base Parallel
Parallel: Mini Red Back

2008 was a great year for baseball cards especially Robin Yount cards.  Upper Deck was in prime form in 2008 and Goudey was a nice retro/vintage set which by now with Topps leading the way had become all the rage with examples like Allen and Ginter, 206, and Heritage.  Not to be outdone Upper Deck followed suit with sets like this and Goodwin Champions.  This homage set is of course based off the 1930s Goudey baseball sets but also to some of the Goudey non-sport sets as well.  The base set was paralleled by 5 mini parallel sets with the red backs being the most common falling in about 1 in 3 packs.  Also mini cards were not one per pack but rather fell about 7 per box (at least that's what baseballcardpedia says.

2009 Upper Deck 20th Anniversary Retrospective #1299

Year: 2009
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: 20th Anniversary Retrospective
Card Number: 1299
Card Type: Base

Today marks a milestone anniversary for Robin Yount.  On this day in 1992 Robin hit his 3000th hit and pretty much assured himself a place in Canton.  Topps has been putting out a retro Topps Now Turn Back the Clock set for a few months now and so far has only featured one Brewers, CC Sabathia.  My hope was today Topps would honor him in the set.  But alas they didn't, so let's honor him here.  Over the years Robin has been featured on many, many cards celebrating the 3000 hit milestone.  It took me a minute to find one I hadn't yet featured and had queued up.
So today we have one of five cards featuring Robin in the massive 2500 card 2009 UD 20th Anniv. Retrospective set.  To be fair the set is kind of boring and all 5 of Yount's cards use the same photo with different captions at the bottom and small write-ups on the back.

2005 Upper Deck Reflections

Year: 2005
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Reflections
Card Number: 152
Card Type: Base

I miss Upper Deck from the baseball card market.  There were some great Upper Deck sets.  I don't think I would count this one as one of them, but if you like shiny cards, this set is for you.  The cards are very shiny and come in a rainbow of colors to chase, six to be exact and they come with varing rarities.  The base cards aren't the stars of the show for this set, no like many, many sets from the mid-2000s the base cards are an afterthought, almost a necessary evil that had to be included in a product release. something we are seeing less and less of these days with higher end products.  But Reflections was a hit driven product and there are lot of nice relics and autos to chase in this set.  Robin has quite a few as well.

2005 Upper Deck Classics - Classics Counterparts Dual Relic

Year: 2005
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set:  Classics
Card Number: CC-MY
Card Type: Insert Relic
Insert Set: Classic Counterparts Materials
Card Attributes: Piece of Authentic
Relic Type: Jersey
Note: Dual relic with Paul Molitor

Going back to the time of plenty.  I really like this insert set. Of course what's not to love about a card featuring two Brewers legends?  And of course it's a dual relic.  The Counterparts insert set consists of a base card numbered to 1999, this relic version, and an autographed version.  Relic and autograph cards are not numbered. Robin and Paul both have base cards in the set, as well as, being featured in other insert sets.

2009 Upper Deck Goudey 4 in 1 #35-29

Year: 2009
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Goudey
Card Number: 35-29
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: 1935 4 in 1

COMC Black Friday Haul #32

Still working my way through the new Yount cards I picked up last year and had delivered after COMC's Black Friday event.  Next up is Robin's 2009 Goudey 4 in 1 that he shares with Prince Fielder, Mike Schmidt and Ryan Howard.  Robin also appears on another card in this set.  I like the past and present theme of this card.  With Mike and Robin representing the past for their franchises and Price and Ryan the future (at least at that moment).  There are a few parallels to this set which pays homage to the 1935, hence the 35 prefix in the numbering, Goudey 4 in 1 cards.

2008 Upper Deck Premier

Year: 2008
Manufacture: Upper Deck
Set: Premier
Card Number: 196
Card Type: Base
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 80/99

Continuing my series of new Younts from my COMC Black Friday hall.  One of the things I love is on Black Friday is to sit in front of my computer with a nice hot cup of coffee and go hunting for cards I need and hopefully find some deals.  It also always surprises me when I find something I though I had, but didn't.  There were quite a few of those cards this year and this 2008 UD Premier base card is one of those cards.  Upper Deck had a couple premium baseball brands near the end of their run on baseball with sets like Ultimate, Sweet Spot, and Premier.  As a matter of fact this base card is rarer than the base cards in this year's Topps Transcendence.  And lets face it Upper Deck could do high end and low end.  The base cards for the Premier set were numbered to just 99.

The front features a great full bleed photo and a nice little design for the serial numbering.  On the back we only get one line of yearly stats, Robin's 1982 MVP season and total career stats.

There are 3 parallel set for the base cards all very low numbered, Blue #/15, Silver #/5, and Gold #/1.

2005 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts

Year: 2005
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: SP Legendary Cuts
Card Number: 69
Card Type: Base

Back when Upper Deck was putting out Baseball Cards, the SP Legendary Cuts set was a fan favorite.  At least I remember it that way.  It was also one of the first sets that was hit driven and the base set is largely an after thought for the set.  The base set is just 90 cards and has only one parallel compared to the insert sets that have multiple parallels, relic parallels, and auto parallels.

But I like the overall stately look of the base cards for the 2005 set. And you can see by how little effort that was put into the backs of the base cards how much of an afterthought they were.

2003 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic Patch

Year: 2003
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Sweet Spot Classic
Card Number: P-RY3
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Souvenir Logo Patch
Card Attributes: Manufactured Patch, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 333/350
Note: Hand Numbered

Lest we forget the Manurelic has been around for awhile now.  Case in point is this 2003 Sweet Spot Classic Souvenir Logo Patch.  This is one of three cards Robin has in the set.  One is another unnumbered Manurelic featuring the glove/ball logo and one game-used patch card numbered to 150.  I like this card, I like the commemorative World Series Patch and I like the photo used.  I even like hand numbering on the card.

2008 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts Base card

Year: 2008
Manufacture: Upper Deck
Set: SP Legendary Cuts
Card Type: Base
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 094/550

2008 a time right before the age of exclusivity.  I miss Upper Deck in the baseball card game.  Sure they deserve their exile, but man they also put out some great sets back in the day.  Hard to believe we are closing in on 10 year's of Topps exclusiveness.  SP Legendary Cuts was on interesting product the relied heavily on relic hits for the set, but there are some really nice autographed cards and combo relic cards in the set.  The base cards are numbered to only 550 and there's only one parallel set, the Memerable Moments numbered to just 1.  The base cards had a nice appeal with a great color head shot and an action black and white photo.  Robin has lots of cards to chase in this set as well from all the relic parallels to some great autographed cards.

2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes Charcoal Parallel

Year: 2008
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Baseball Heroes
Card Number: 99
Card Type: Base Parallel
Parallel Set: Charcoal
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 295/399

The 2008 Upper Deck Baseball Heroes set is the poster child for parallels.  Much like the insane sets put out by Donruss earlier the set pretty much centers around the base checklist and then just parallels it to death.  There are 10 base color parallels alone for this set and then 20 auto, relic, and auto relic parallels.  Although not every player is in every parallel set.  Robin's card here is the Charcoal parallel, or gray.  Besides the coloring, which is also featured on the back, each parallel, except for the Black parallel, is serial numbered.  The Charcoal just happen to be numbered out of 399, with just the Emerald, numbered to 499, and the unnumbered Black parallels being less rare.

2006 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts - Baseball Chronology Platinum

Year: 2006
Manufacture: Upper Deck
Set: SP Legendary Cuts
Card Number: BC-RY
Card Type: Insert Parallel
Insert Set: Baseball Chronology
Parallel: Platinum
Card Attrbutes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 49/99

Still working on my Black Friday COMC haul.  Next up is one of the few low numbered parallels I picked up in the haul.  Legendary Cuts was a great HOF and retired themed product.  And it's been a few years since we had a nice HOF dedicated set.  They were all the rage for awhile.  Robin is featured in the base set a couple of the inserts.  The Baseball Chronology set has a few serial numbered parallels and a relic parallel as well.  Robin's card here is part of the Platinum parallel numbered to 99.  The team logo, where the relic would go in the relic parallel, and serial numbering is that shimmery holo silver foil and looks very nice in hand.

2002 Upper Deck Piece of History MVP Club Relic Card

Year: 2002
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Piece of History
Card Type: Insert, Relic
Insert Set: The MVP Club
Card Number: M-RY
Card Attributes: Relic, SP
Relic Type: Pants

I've been on an eBay hiatus for almost a year.  No buying or selling.  But as my summer work schedule slowed down I decided to jump back in sell a few cards to build a little nest egg in my Paypal account and maybe hunt for a few treasures.  I've been searching for this card for over 16 years.  Beckett has this card listed as a short print or SP, but doesn't have an estimated print run.  But I can tell you I've maybe seen 3 of these come up for auction in the last decade and a half and a quick search over at Worthpoint.com show about 4 or 5 unique auctions in the last ten years.  So lets just say it's been hard to find and even harder to pick up as the few cards bid on have gone for way more than I wanted to pay.  So I was very pleased to have picked up this card for less than $6 delivered.  It's the last card of Robin's in the set I needed.  Robin is featured in the base set as well as 3 inserts sets.  Tape Measure Heroes, Hitting for the Cycle, and the MVP club, he also happens to have cards in the two of the relic parallel sets,  this set and Tape Measure Heroes.  The two color relic was a big deal in 2002 when most relics were plain, one color swatches, but it seems like there were lots and lots of pieces of Robin's pinstriped pants to go around back then.  A great addition to the collection and I'm glad to finally be able to cross this card off the want list.

2009 Upper Deck Goudey 4 in 1 35-29 Black

Year:2009
Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Set: Goudey
Card Number: 35-29
Card Type: Insert Parallel
Insert Set: Goudey 4 in 1
Parallel Set: Black Border
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 12/21

Today we have one of Upper Deck's forays into the vintage homage sets.  Fleer actually brought back Goudey as insert in 1997 baseball and did a full blown Goudey Football set the same year.  After Upper Deck bought the Fleer brand it was only a matter of time before they brought back Goudey as well.  The 4 in 1 insert was a nod to the 1935 Goudey 4 in 1's, or R321.  However where the original Goudey cards were 2 x 2's, or something like that, these cards are the standard 2 x 3.  Robin's actually featured on 2 4 in 1's, this card and #35-23 which features all Brewers.  The card also features Prince Fielder, Mike Schmidt and Ryan Howard, kind of like a past and present for each team.  The black bordered cards are the rarest of the 3 parallels for the set and the only one that is serial numbered.
