2000 Fleer Greats of the Game

Card Manufacturer: Fleer
Card Set: Greats of the Game
Year: 2000
Card Number: 57
Card Type: Base

A great, but small set of cards in this issue from Fleer.  The main selling point of the product was the 4 on card autographed cards per box and the checklist was pretty stacked.  Autos from this set still demand a pretty decent price.  Robin also has a short printed auto in the set.

His base card isn't so bad either. I like that it looks like he's about to jump out of the card, as Fleer cropped the left side, but has Robin's arm and glove spilling out off the right.

The back is a great resource of information too, with full MLB career stats and a nice little write up with a few interesting facts.

2014 Topps Dynasty teaser

Topps just posted this picture from their 2014 Dynasty Baseball line. Schwwwweet.

I was assuming that Robin might have a couple cards in the issue as Topps has been heaping a lot of love on Milwaukee's golden boy all year. It's due out mid-November and is going to be super high end.  I don't expect to be able to afford any of Robin's cards out of the set, but I'll definitely be posting images and a checklist once it's released.

2000 Upper Deck Hitter's Club Accolades Insert card.

Card Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Card Set: Hitter's Club
Year: 2000
Card Number: A1
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Accolades

In 1999 after Robin was elected to the Hall of Fame he was issued a couple cards. But in 2000 the flood gates started to open as card companies continued to offer sets that featured retired and HOF players.  Upper Deck's HItter's Club was an offering that had a tiny base set, only 90 cards, but featured some great inserts and the big hits were focused on Tony Gywnn and Wade Boggs entry into the 3000 hits club.

Robin was featured in a couple of the insert sets.  The Accolades set featured mostly active players, but there were a couple HOFers in it.

1978 7-11 Slurpee Cup

Collectible Type: Drinkware
Manufacturer: 7-11
Types: Slurpee Cup
Year: 1978

I know I featured this a while back in a larger post featuring all my Yount drinkware.  And oddly enough I think I have over 5 different pieces in that collection now.

We have here another great oddball collectible the 1978 7-11 Slurpee Cup.  Over the years 7-11 has offered tons of different players not only in baseball, but other sports and comic book characters as well.  The cup is plastic and features a nice head shot with the team logo airbrushed out and a short bio on the opposite site.  I have also seen another version of this cup with a different photo on it, but that might also be from another year.

1990 Topps Big

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Card Set: Topps Big
Year: 1990
Card Number: 59
Card Type: Base

This was the last year for Topps Big.  Again issued in three 110 card series' for a total set size of 330.  These cards were colorful and cartoony, but a bitch to store and display since the cards measured 2 5⁄8 × 3 3⁄4 inches.  Still a fun, cheap set and easy to find.  These also come pretty standard in repacks.

2014 Topps Throwback Thursday 1980's Online Exclusive Postcard

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Card Set: Thowback Thursday 1980's Postcard
Year: 2014
Card Number: NNO
Card Type: Online Exclusive box set
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial number: 33/49

What better way to celebrate Thurday then with a throwback?  A Topps throwback.  These cards were part of a larger 15 card set you could only find on Topps.com.  Topps did a 2014 version and these 1980's versions.  I for the life of me couldn't  find a full checklist for the sets.  Topps website isn't very helpful.  But I've pieced together the 15 card set from the internet.

Wade Boggs
George Brett
Gary Carter
Dwight Gooden
Tony Gwynn
Orel Hershiser
Paul Molitor
Jack Morris
Dale Murphy
Eddie Murray
Cal Ripken, Jr
Ryne Sandberg
Mike Schmidt
Ozzie Smith
Robin Yount

The cards measure 5x7 inches and are hand numbered to only 49!  I think I was pretty lucky to be able to pick this guy up for about 5 bucks.

The card has a very 1980's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air look to it. But a great oddball and I'm a lover of all things oddball.

2006 Fleer Greats of the Game Decade Greats Bat Card

Card Manufacturer: Fleer
Card Set: Greats of the Game
Year: 2006
Card Number: DEC-RY
Card Type: Insert Relic
Insert Set: Decade Greats
Relic Type: Bat

Fleer's 2006 Greats of the Game was a great set featuring tons of HOFers and other popular players.  This would be the fifth and final time Fleer would put out this brand, but overall it was a pretty great set with lots of great autos and relics to be had

Robin has a base card in the set, as well as, a couple of inserts.

That includes this great relic card from the Decade Greats insert set.  There is also a base version of this card and also an autograph and relic autograph version.

The overall look of the card is pretty good. I love the use of Brewer's colors, the old school logo, and great action shot of Robin.  But the placement of the relic seems wrong with it cutting off Robin's hand.

1991 Star Stellar #28

Card Manufacturer: Star
Card Set: Stellar
Year: 1991
Card Number: 28
Card Type: Base

Star cards.  So mysterious and colorful.  I'll be honest information on the Star company is pretty sparse.  Tony L over at Off Hiatus Baseball cards had some info and I think he left it here in a comment a while back.  Something about illegally printing Michael Jordan cards eventually got the company shut down.

Anyway, Star had a bunch of different sets from the late 80's into the early nineties. Most sets were player specific and featured different astronomical names. Like Nova, Stellar, and Millennium.  They also put out a bunch of minor league team sets.  Set came in bags or, with some of the smaller numbered sets, in hinged crystal cases.

If I remember Stellar was a set the featured 9 cards from the same players and was one of the higher end sets being limited to only 500, or so it is printed. The set was numbered from 1 to what ever and the players filled those sets with their 9 cards.  Robin is featured on cards 28 to 36 in this set. Each card featured a different picture and the back featured different stats and facts.

This is the first card of Robin's run in the set.  The back features his full stats up to 1990.  We can even date the photo on the card to 1986. We can tell by the Sully patch on the sleeve.  The patch memorialized Bob Sullivan. He had been the teams equipment manager since the team came into existence in Seattle and passed away prior to the 1986 season.

2014 Topps Update Fond Farewells

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Card Set: Topps Update Baseball
Year: 2014
Card Number: FF-RY
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Fond Farwells

This never happens to me.  I ended up picking up a blaster of Topps Update the other day.  Saw it was on the shelf and hemmed and hawed until I looked at the checklist for the manu-relics.  The checklist had two Reggie Jacksons, a Rollie Fingers and a Paul Molitor possible, three guys I collect so what the hell. I didn't get any of those guys, but in the packs I did end up pulling one of the insert cards I really wanted.  Robin Yount's Fond Farewells.  The other card I wanted is the relic version of this card. It would have been cool if Topps had actually carried Robin over to the two other parallels of this card, the autograph and relic autograph.

Overall the card is pretty simple, but it works well. I like the name in foil script, the classic Brewers mitt logo and nice little write up on the back.  A great addition to the collection, now to hunt down one of those relics!

2004 Donruss Elite Turn of the Century Parallel

Card Manufacturer: Donruss
Card Set: Elite
Year: 2004
Card Number: 196
Card Type: Base Parallel
Parallel Set: Turn of the Century
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 082/250

Who doesn't love shiny cards? Well who doesn't love shiny cards back when shiny cards were the exception not the norm?  Ah good old Donruss Elite. Panini still puts out the Elite brand, but it's not quite the same without all the logos and team names, but still really, really shiny. And Elite now is more of Panini's shiny version of Bowman focusing mostly on rookies.

Robin had a card in the 2004 set. He had a high number which were reserved for retired players.
This is the Turn of the Century parallel and you can tell, one because it's numbered to 250 and two it says so right on the front of the card.

There are other versions of this card as well.  The base card is numbered to only  1000 and the status parallels that are numbered super low.

Yount Supreme!

Topps brings it's Supreme brand over to Baseball this year and Robin is featured on a few cards in the set.  The cards aren't due out till the end of October, but the checklist is up over at Cardboard Connection and while perusing it I notice Robin had a couple cards featured.  There won't be many and they will be very pricey I'm sure.

Here's what I found in the checklist
-Topps Supreme Triple Autographs TA-RSY with Cal Ripken Jr., Ozzie Smith, and Robin Yount (not sure of the numbering)
-Topps Supreme Simply Supreme Autograph Base  SSU-RY #/50

2007 Upper Deck Ultimate: Ultimate Star Materials

Card Manufacturer: Upper Deck
Card Set: Ultimate
Year: 2007
Card Number: SM-RY
Card Type: Insert Relic
Insert Set: Ultimate Star Materials Relic
Relic Type: Jersey/Pants
Card Attributes: Relic

Oh Upper Deck how I miss you in the baseball card market.  The early 2000's brought us the age of the relic card and by 2007 relic cards were in their early middle age.  I would say now the relic cards are in their extreme old age. We almost expect to get a relic in every pack so much so that most relic cards are pretty worthless unless you get a superstar.

But there was a day when relic cards were a great hit and getting a card with more than one color meant a higher resale value.  Especially with all the mono-colored swatches out there getting a card like this with the pinstripe directly in the center was quite a score.

Ultimate had some great stuff.  This is a great Yount relic. Simple, but well balanced.  I like the full body shot of Robin. The relic prominently featured with a nice gold foil border and, of course, that gorgeous blue pinstripe dead center.  Unnumbered and fairly common these aren't too expensive and fairly easy to find.  As a matter of fact there's one of these on COMC.com that's under $5.

On a sidenote - currently most of Robin's relics are now bat relics leading me to believe that the card makers might be running out of jerseys to use for cards.  I guess it was bound to happen.

2014 Topps Update includes some Younts!

By my count Robin has been issued 190 new cards this year.  You read that right.  Sure that number includes printing plates, other 1/1 cards and all those variations and parallels, but the simple fact is Robin has been getting a lot of love this year being featured in almost every issue Topps and Panini has put out this year.  Well with Topps Update due out Wednesday he's has a couple cards included in the set as well.

I was perusing the checklist over at Cardboard Connection and noticed the new insert set Fond Farwells.

Robin will have a base card and a relic card, but is not featured in the autograph and auto relic versions.

Topps release one live photo of the Auto relic version of Johnny Smoltz.

2014 Panini Hall of Fame 75th Anniversary Younts Checklist and Gallery

Robin has quite a few cards available in this new issue from Panini.  I've added all the cards to the 2014 checklist page as well.

1981 Kellogg's Uncut Proof Sheet

Card Manufacturer: Kellogg's
Card Set: 3-D Super Stars
Card #57
Card Type: Uncut Sheet

Kellogg's put out food issue sets from 1970 to 1983.  You got cards free in specially marked packages and there usually was also a send in offer.  Robin has a couple cards in a few of the sets including the 1981 3-D Super Stars set.  What we have here is a cool oddball.  A sheet of 9 uncut cards with no lenticular layer.  I'm not sure if this was also a send in item, if it was pulled at the printing plant, or if the auction I won it actually claimed it to be a proof sheet..

Either way a cool oddball with two Brewers greats, Tommy John, Bruce Sutter and others.
