COMC Black Friday Haul #42

Keeping with the last couple posts we have another parallel to show off.  One of the things I really love about COMC and one of the main reasons it's become my primary online shopping source is it allows me to play the long game when it comes to picking up parallels like this.  Had I tried to pick this up off of eBay back in 2015 it would have likely cost me close to $10 with shipping.  That's a lot more than I paid for it or would have wanted to pay for it.  Overall I love the card and photo choice.  I would gripe about the photo being overused, but to be fair there are multiple photos of Robin in this pose taken throughout his career.  It's very possible this is reused image, as in  Topps was reusing lots of the same image over and over around this time frame.  Still a great card and still low numbered and a great addition to the collection

COMC Black Friday Haul #16

Patience. As far as card collecting is concerned I've learned to have a lot of patience.  There were days not too long ago that I would have jumped all over any and all parallels for Robin right when they were released.  It's a  conundrum at times, because the time you see the most of any one particular card, parallel wise, is at release, that's also the time when prices are highest.  As I've gotten older, married, and become a father, my priorities have shifted, as well as, my extra cash.  So I wait.  I'll probably harp on this a little more, but I quit eBay, both buying and selling early last year.  While eBay may still be the largest online market place for just about everything, the fees and predatory buyers made selling a hassle and the increase in postage made buying single cards even more expensive.  Hence why I've picked up the majority of new additions via COMC.  What does this card have to do with patience?  Well everything.  I sure didn't pounce on one of these low numbered parallels when the set was released and I still hadn't purchased one for over 4 years.  But patience paid off and I found this card for a great price a couple months before Black Friday.  It's another reason I love shopping on COMC.  While deals can be elusive at times, with a little work and patience they can be had.

2015 Panini Cooperstown - Red parallel

Year: 2015
Manufacturer: Panini
Set: Cooperstown
Card Number: 82
Card Type: Parallel
Parallel Set: Red
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 08/35

Even without a license Panini has done a pretty decent job with it's Hall of Fame sets using induction photographs and nice close ups like this one.  Plus while the photos are in black and white, negating having to photoshop the colors, they are incredibly clear and detailed.  The set has 5 base parallels, not counting the 4 printing plates.  And at just 35 copies each the Red parallel is the most numerous.  Like all the recent cards I've been featuring I was able to pick this up sometime last year and had it delivered as part of Black Friday shipment from COMC.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen Mini

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2015
Card Set: Gypsy Queen
Card Number: 21
Card Type: Mini Parallel
Parallel Type: Base Mini Parallel

I'm a sucker for these mini cards.  I love'em.  Robin's been a fixture in every Gypsy Queen set since the inaugural release in 2011.  More often then not he's got a base card in the set, sometimes it's just a relic or other insert.  He's also been award a pretty prestigious honor of also being paralleled in the exclusive mini box variations that get put in hobby boxes.  This card is not one of those variations.  It's just the plain old base mini parallel.  But still a nice looking card.

2015 Topps Gypsy Queen White Framed Parallel

Card Manufacturer: Topps
Year: 2015
Card Set: Gypsy Queen
Card Number: 21
Card Type: Base Parallel
Parallel Type: White (Pearl) Paper Framed - Retail exclusive

In 2015, once again Robin was featured in the Gypsy Queen set.  If my memory serves me right he's been featured in every base set except for one year and I don't feel like digging that up.  Last year the retail exclusive borders were these White or Pearl framed cards.  Very nice to look at.  There were found as a bonus to the retail 3 pack hangers and featured 3 of these cards per hanger.  If you missed it Robin is going to be featured in the 2016 Gypsy Queen set as a high numbered SP.  Not sure if any of those cards will be framed or not and not sure of all the parallels either.  But we are only a couple days away from product launch so stay tuned I'll have a detailed checklist for Robin for the set and an image gallery.

2015 Topps Tribute

Year: 2015
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Tribute
Card Number: 63
Card Type: Base

I find it interesting I acquired one of Robin's relic cards from this set well before I picked up my first base card.  But you'll remember this set had problems with the autographs, the main selling point for the set, and Topps ended up recalling the product, so a lot of the base cards and parallels were never opened.  Topps then rereleased Tribute as a Special Edition with a very high price point and new configuration that really marketed the product to case breakers.  Anyway, I finally found a seller on COMC that didn't want an arm and a leg for this card.  Just a regular base card nothing special here, but probably the hardest base card in 2015 to find, at least for me.

2015 Topps Tribute Jersey Relic

Year: 2015
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Tribute
Card Number: TR-RY
Card Type: Insert Relic
Insert Set: Tribute Relics Base
Relic Type: Jersey
Card Attributes: Relic, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 035/199

Fresh out of the mailbox.  One of my latest additions from ebay seller wfbookmen.  The seller Jon has a fairly regular Yount mega selection.  Sometimes it's a little overwhelming, but I've learned that I can't have everything and usually will focus on a couple cards or oddball items and take advantage of his generous combined shipping.

This marks the first of any 2015 Tribute cards to make it into my collection.  You may remember Topps recalled this project last year due to quality control issues with the autographs.  Topps has finally re-released it, but at an insane configuration and price point.  Anyways I still have yet to pick up any of Robin's base cards from the set, but I will.

The overall design isn't that bad.  It's been following this 1920's art deco style that Topps has been putting into Tribute for a while now.  I also like the fact that there is a little color on the swatch.  I remember back in the early 2000's when relic cards were really popular that the premium cards were the 2 color one's like this.  Now a days if it isn't a patch swatch it's really just filler.  But I'll take my new Yount relic,  This is the base relic numbered to 199, like all products these days there are lots of color parallels to chase.

Year in Review

Wow hard to believe the year is really over.  This year flew by.  All in all a pretty good year. This has been the first summer in a long time I've gotten to stick around home for most of it.  Got a trip down to Wisconsin for my brother's wedding and a trip down to Indiana for my wife's family Christmas.

On the posting side I've reached some big blogging milestones on this blog. While most of my other blogs have really suffered from my general malaise in the overall trading card world, my passion for my Yount collection has really kept me going.  It's been  few years now since I really refocused the blog on featuring every one of Robin's cards in it's own solo post so that I can link it to my collection checklist.  I have no intention of stopping that. As a matter of fact I have almost 400 items scanned and drafts ready to go.  I also blew away my previous yearly post total and if I had tried a little harder I might have doubled it.

I also decided to sponsor Robin's player page over at the Trading Card Database.  It's something I've wanted to do for awhile now, not just to promote the blog, but I also wanted to help support the database, as it's  one of my favorite card collecting resources.  I've also made it a mission to try and find as many images of Robin's cards I can to help archive them in the database and to correct and add any card information I find.

On the collection side I really haven't added that many pieces to the collection.  That's due to a couple factors.  One is available funds and the fact that I've reached a point where most of the cards I don't have in my collection are expensive relics and autos.  But I have managed to add a few great pieces I've featured recently.  As it stands the collection holds about 1050 items.  That includes everything, cards, magazines, drinkware, bobbleheads, etc.

The other aspect of the blog is collecting Yount card news. Whether it be new cards, like sorting our the Cooperstown inserts and base cards, documenting all the cards Topps put out in it's Archives Signature Series, keeping up with the fringe card producers like Leaf and Hits, or just finding out something new about something old, like Hostess cards. I want the Yount Collector to be that place that documents, archives, and educates the few of us who love to collect Robin Yount. But I also want it to be a tool if you collect other players and are looking for information on sets, maybe you'll gleam a little info from here as well.

I've also added a link list to other great player collection sites and blogs.  Like 4192 Cards that's all about Pete Rose, The Tim Wallach Collector, The Mark Grace Collector, The Junior Junkie, Collecting Sandy Alomar Jr., and Nachos Grande where Chris loves the Barry Larkin. That being said if you have a blog committed to a player collection drop me a line I'll add you to that list.

I've also kept a pretty up to date checklist with all of Robin's cards released this year and I plan on doing that next year as well.  With National Treasures pretty much being the end of the 2015 Baseball card releases Robin's card count stands at 251, but that doesn't include a bunch of cards from HITS, so when I can figure that checklist out I'll added it. I also updated the Trading Card Database with all of the different variations of the Brewers Police issue cards thanks to Tony L for the checklist of issuing towns and cities.  Right now Robin's total card count stands at just under 5000 cards.  As I continue to add and help correct checklists on the site I'm sure that total will over top the 5K early this year.

I'll have a State of the Blog post soon, yep another one of those.  Thanks for reading.

New Yount Alert! 2015 Topps Strata Shadowbox Signatures

I was just looking though the checklist of this year's Topps Strata Baseball and noticed Robin has a card in the Shadowbox Autographs set.  That means 3 new cards with the parallels.  I'm sure the base auto is numbered as well, but that wasn't listed in the checklist so I'll update the checklist once this goes live.  I'm also going to use this page as an archival image gallery for the cards, as I'm sure I won't be adding one of these to the collection unless I get really lucky.

2015 Leaf 25th Baseball Yount checklist and gallery

I already chronicled his pre-production cards Leaf sold on ebay in October. I'll be tweeking the checklist if more information becomes available, but I think the publish checklist looks pretty good.
Robin is the only player not to have a Purple Clear auto in the set.  From the looks of it Acetate or clear cards are foil stamped on the front, the Pure or glass cards are hand numbered on the front, and Metal cards are foil numbered on the back.

2015 Panini Cooperstown Crown Royal Silver Parallel

Year: 2015
Manufacturer: Panini
Set: Cooperstown
Card Number: 82
Card Type: Insert Parallel
Insert Set: Crown Royale
Parallel Set: Silver
Card Attributes: Die-cut, Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 63/75

I've been building a small stack of cards in my portfolio over at COMC.  While good deals on Robin's cards can be few and far between they do happen and I've been steadily picking up store credit with their Challanges and picking up cards when I find a good deal.  I ended up throwing $20  in my account as well this year, an early Christmas present to myself and it helped me get over the 20 card threshold for free shipping during COMC's big Black Friday promotion.  I picked up quite a few cards for my player collections.  The majority were for Frank Thomas, but I did get 8 new Younts which I will be featuring.

First up is the this very shiny Crown Royale insert card from this year's Cooperstown set.  I have yet to add a base card from the set to my collection, but I now have a very low numbered insert.  You can see Robin's full card checklist from the set here and an explanation of all the confusing inserts here.

I'm pretty happy with this one.  It was the second most expensive card I purchased for Black Friday, but was still very reasonable.

2015 Topps Archives Signature Edition Checklist and Gallery

I just saw the autograph subject checklist for 2015 Archives Signature Series  and Robin in on the list!  From what I could find this comes out tomorrow? maybe?  One encased autographed buyback card per box.  I'll use this post as a place to collect any information and images I can find.

Edit:
I'll be adding these to the checklist when I think we've found most of them, but it looks like with all of Robin's cards numbered to 5 or less, mostly less, there might be a few 1 of 1's that never see the light of day or are ever posted.  And given that Topps hasn't released a full checklist of cards used we may never know.

Cards found so far 16

2015 Leaf History of Baseball Cut Signature cards

I don't own one of these yet, but so far prices have been reasonable from sold listings on ebay.  I think they are averaging under $30.  The majority of cards I've seen use a signed Hall of Fame plaque postcards.  However I've found one listing that looks like a signed index card.  All cards are encased and are limited to just 46 examples.

You get one card per box, and right now boxes are going for about $50 online.

If I find any different examples I'll post them here.

2008 Topps Sterling #219

Year: 2008
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Sterling
Card Number: 219
Player Card Number: RY3
Card Type: Base
Card Attributes: Serial numbered
Serial number: 203/250

The third card in Robin's 11 card base card set from Topps Sterling.  This card celebrates his break out year in 1980, where he would win the first of this three Silver Slugger awards.  The other two would come in years that he also won the AL MVP award, 1982 and 1989.
