2009 Upper Deck Goudey 4 in 1 35-29 Black

Year:2009

Manufacturer: Upper Deck

Set: Goudey

Card Number: 35-29

Card Type: Insert Parallel

Insert Set: Goudey 4 in 1

Parallel Set: Black Border

Card Attributes: Serial Numbered

Serial Number: 12/21

Today we have one of Upper Deck's forays into the vintage homage sets.  Fleer actually brought back Goudey as insert in 1997 baseball and did a full blown Goudey Football set the same year.  After Upper Deck bought the Fleer brand it was only a matter of time before they brought back Goudey as well.  The 4 in 1 insert was a nod to the 1935 Goudey 4 in 1's, or R321.  However where the original Goudey cards were 2 x 2's, or something like that, these cards are the standard 2 x 3.  Robin's actually featured on 2 4 in 1's, this card and #35-23 which features all Brewers.  The card also features Prince Fielder, Mike Schmidt and Ryan Howard, kind of like a past and present for each team.  The black bordered cards are the rarest of the 3 parallels for the set and the only one that is serial numbered.

Well it's not saying much about the set, but Robin is the most represented Brewer in the product.  I'll add images as I find them.

1987 Fleer Limited Edition

Year: 1987

Manufacturer: Fleer

Set: Limited Edition Box Set

Card Number: 44

Card Type: Base

Another day another box set card.  The 80's were awash in these cheap sets.  I can remember seeing these at my LCS back in the 80's for a buck a piece.  But the nice thing about these sets is you got 44 cards of pretty much the hottest players of the day.  Robin is featured in quite a few of them.  Here we have 1987's Fleer Limited Edition.  You can see the full checklist here. Overall the design is pretty basic, but not unappealing.  Fleer like a lot of the other card companies put out a lot of these kinds of sets.  Sometimes on their own and other times in conjunction with a store, like K-mart or Woolsworth.  Still fun to pick out your players.  Contrary to the name this set was not limited in anyway and like most of these box sets were very overproduced.  You can still find these sets for a buck a piece if you look for them.

1989 Topps Mini Leaders

Year: 1989

Manufacturer: Topps

Set: Leaders Minis

Card Number: 59

Card Type: Base

My other barn find from my Topps National Baseball Card Day super shoebox pick up was this 1989 Topps Leaders mini card.  As a matter of fact there were two Younts and the other 2 Brewers to make a complete team set.  After flipping through all the Mini Leaders cards there was almost a complete set.  It really surprised me I didn't already have a copy of this card.  But I'm glad I serendipitously found a couple copies without having to hit the internet.  If you're unfamiliar with the set these cards came 7 per pack, only 77 cards in the set.  They were touted as super glossy, which they are compared to the 89 flagship set, and quite a bit smaller, hense the hobby designation of mini.  Topps untilized the base 89 team name and player name banner, throws in a fuzzy edge border and bam, new set.

In my opinion the backs are the best part of the card.  There's so much going on back there.  Plus you get a second photos, last year's and career total stats, and some fun facts.  And it's bright.

1989 Panini Stickers

Year: 1989

Manufacturer: Panini

Set: Baseball Stickers

Card Number: 337

Card Type: Base Sticker

For Topps' National Baseball Card Day I visited both my LCS's in the Anchorage area.  While at Don's I picked up some cheap autos and relics off his drop boards and he had a super shoebox full of miscellaneous baseball cards for $10 bucks.  It was hard to resist especially since I noticed a stack of 89 Panini stickers in the mix.  When I got home and started sorting out the cards I found that about a third of the box was 2012 Panini Triple Play and another third was 1990 Topps.  But doing a little digging there was some gold to be found.  In the box I was not only able to find one Yount card I needed, but two.  I'll feature the other card a little later.  One of my goals before COMC's next Black Friday sale is to have my sticker needs, both Panini and Topps, and try to bust them out.

But I can scratch off Robin's 1989 Panini Sticker from my list.  I consider this my barn find.  I was also lucky enough to pick up about half the Brewers team for the set.  I like the look of the sticker, simple nice team colors on the border and banners.

Fear not I plan on giving out baseball cards, as well as candy, for Halloween this year, and these will make great filler.

2018 Topps Archives Robin Yount Checklist and Gallery

I'm not sure but I think this is the first base card that Robin has this year.  And of course a couple inserts.  I'll add images as I find them.  Retail hits 8/14/18, but Hobby was pushed back to September.  That'll be interesting to see what kind of interest there is in the Hobby product with a retail version having already been out a month, but maybe there will be some hobby exclusive goodies that will make it worth it.
