Another PSA graded Yount that I got from fellow Yount collector Matt many years ago.  A beautiful hand cut Robin Yount from the 1987 General Mills Booklets.  I'm pretty sure I have an uncut one of these somewhere, but looked in my Excel spreadsheet inventory but don't see it listed.  I'll have to dig deeper to see if I actually do.  Regardless the "card" was cut out of booklet that was inserted in Cherrios and Honey Nut Cheerios in Canada back in 1987.  There were 6 different booklets and each booklet featured 10 players.  Robin's booklet is the AL East booklet and  features Don Mattingly, Ricky Henderson, Kirk Gibson, Eddie Murray, among others.  

Produced by MSA and if you collect Robin Yount you probably recognized this well used airbrushed photo.  A great looking specimen for the Yount collection.

In 1991 the trading card market was starting to get crowded.  Not as crowded as it would be come by the mid to late 90s and early 2000s, but the writing was on the wall and the race for innovation was on.  Fleer and Donruss were still playing catch up into the more premium card market that Upper Deck launched in 1989 and Topps countered with Stadium Club.  In 1991 Fleer would launch Ultra and Donruss gave us Studio.  Studio was meant to be a stately set.  A throwback to the cabinet cards of the turn of the century.  And Donruss did a pretty good job with this inaugural issue.  The magenta borders work well with the black and white photos and there is a nice write up on the back.  The 1992 issue was a step backward for the set and wasn't a great follow-up to this first set, but in 1993 Donruss really stepped up there game with a glossy finish and holofoil and never looked back putting out some pretty nice versions of this set.  In 1991 this was all you got.  Just a really nice base set, no foil or color parallels, absolutely no autographs or relics, just the standard puzzle piece insert for the black and white Rod Carew.

Just a heads up Robin has a variation card in the new 2020 Series 2 Edition of the Kenny Mayne 52 Card Baseball Game.  Since the card is a variation, of one of the 7's, it's not guaranteed when you purchase the box set.  There are 5 variations included with each set. Continuing on my with my collection of graded cards I got from fellow Yount collector Matt, about a decade ago is this 1989 Topps Big card.  The card graded NM-MT 8 and to my aging eyes the card looks great.  

As a collector that loves oddballs and gimmicks I like the Topps Big set.  But as a practical collector I find the large size a hurdle, much like 1989 Bowman, for storage and display, but this card fits right into the rest of my graded card collection.

Over the years I've never really gotten into graded cards.   I can count on one hand the number of graded cards I've actually purchased, but quite a few year's ago a fellow Yount collector, Matt,  sent me a ton graded Younts while trying to pare down his collection.  Matt has the highest ranking Yount collection on the PSA registry and about a decade ago he contacted me asking if I'd like some of his extras that didn't make the grade for his registry set.  Not to look a gift horse in the mouth I graciously accepted and 99% of the graded Yount cards in my collection have come from him.  The cards he sent were all in beautiful shape, but most did not make the grade to gem mint 10.  However mixed in the lots were a couple cards that did.  One of those cards was this 1990 Score Superstars.  

The 1990 Superstars set was a box set of 100 cards.  It's about the size of the old Topps Traded sets. And like all sets from this era it was grossly overproduced, however the nice thing about the box sets from the 80s and 90s is they are chocked full of superstars and now HOFers.

Going back to the time of plenty.  I really like this insert set. Of course what's not to love about a card featuring two Brewers legends?  And of course it's a dual relic.  The Counterparts insert set consists of a base card numbered to 1999, this relic version, and an autographed version.  Relic and autograph cards are not numbered. Robin and Paul both have base cards in the set, as well as, being featured in other insert sets.

I posted about this card when it was made available on the Topps website late last year.  Robin was in the last round of weekly offerings.  The set had a bunch of different themed sub-sets: Rookie Campaigns, Historic Moments, Artist Renditions, and Records and Award Winners.  I was hoping that Robin was going to get the Artist Rendition treatment, because Graig Kreindlers art is incredible, but I'll settle for Robin just being in the set.  Robin's card commemorates his 1982 MVP season and award.
