2008 Donruss Threads - Silver Century Proof

Year: 2008
Manufacturer: Donruss
Set: Threads
Card Number: 29
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Silver Century Proof
Card Attributes: Serial Numbered
Serial Number: 037/100

As I've stated before this last year's haul from COMC's Black Friday sale concentrated more on filling in holes and picking up fairly common cards, but I did manage to snag a couple low numbered parallels for the collection.  Next up we have one of Donruss' last issues before being bought by Panini.  This was also before Topps got exclusivity on the hobby, but Donruss made this set without a MLB license or an MLBPA license.  And still got away with using true team colors and partial logos.  This was before Upper Deck pretty much made sure that wouldn't happen again.  For an unlicensed set it's not bad,  the overall design is nice I like the baseball rounds in the corner, but for the most part the card is pretty simple and they sure didn't waste any money putting too much information on the back of the card.

2002 Topps Tribute

Year: 2002
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Tribute
Card Number: 40
Card Type: Base

We are on the downhill run of my Black Friday COMC pick-posts, I promise.  But we still have a few more cards to get through.  Like I've stated before this year was more about filling in holes than picking up cool parallels or inserts, but I still managed a few of both.  The next card up is probably from the highest end set in the bunch.  Tribute was one of Topps' first real premium high end brands and still is, even if it's been eclipsed by even more expensive sets.  The set features some great autographs, relics, and auto relic cards, some of which Robin has in the set, there are also two very low numbered parallel sets called, First Impressions and Lasting Impressions.

This is another card that should have probably already been in the collection, but was somehow missed.  The cards is very shiny. I like the overall look of the card, the set is themed around Milestones and celebrates Robin's 3000th hit. I even like that Topps used it's copyright notice as a border on the back of the card.

2002 Topps Gallery

Year: 2002
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Gallery
Card Number: 194
Card Type: Base

Still working through my Black Friday haul from COMC.  Next up one of favorite sets that Topps produces.  Topps started the brand in 1996 and still puts out sets today, although the past couple year's have been retail exclusives.  I didn't know much about the artist, Ron Stark, but he does have a website and appears to be as active as ever as a sports artist.

What's most odd about the set is there aren't a ton of parallels to chase.  Other than the inserted printing plates there's not any full parallel sets.  There are a couple player variations for certain players, Robin is not one of them.

2002 Fleer Authentix - Ballpark Classics

Year: 2002
Manufacturer: Fleer
Set: Authentix
Card Number: 7BC
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Ballpark Classics

You know what you don't see much anymore?  Cards with suffixes.  Plenty of inserts with prefixes, but not many suffixes.  That was a Fleer's MO for a long time.  Most of the base inserts would have a suffix and  if that insert had a relic or autograph parallel it would usually have a prefix.   At end of Fleers lifespan as a standalone company things started getting a little wacky.  Ahem, but this post is about the next card to be featured from my COMC Black Friday haul.

Like most of my purchases and pick ups last year from COMC it was more about filling in holes than picking up flashy low numbered card like I did the year before.  This is another card that slipped through for almost 2 decades.  According to baseballcardpedia.com the over all odds for pulling one of these inserts was 1:22 for hobby and 1:24 for retail making them about 1 per box, so not to easy to pull.  This insert also has 2 dual relic parallels, one being unnumbered and the gold version being numbered to 100.  The base insert has numbered parallels.

Overall it's not that great of an insert with Fleer using black and white or sepia tinted photos.  I suppose it was suppose to make the card look vintage or nostalgic, but really it just makes the card look drab.

1986 Topps Tiffany

Year: 1986
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Collector's Edition "Tiffany"
Card Number: 780
Card Type: Base

My final tiffany pick up from this year's COMC Black Friday haul.  The 1985 and 1986 sets have the smallest print run of any of the Collector's Edition, or Tiffany, sets.  With only 5000 sets produced.

Man those backs are really red!

1985 Topps Tiffany

Year: 1985
Manufacture: Topps
Set: Collector's Series "Tiffany"
Card Number: 340
Card Type: Base

Still working through my big COMC Black Friday Yount delivery and might as well continue with the Tiffanys.

1985 marked the second year that Topps put out the glossy front and better card stock set.  It also only produced half the sets it did for the inaugural run in 1984, with only 5000 sets being produced.  So in current terms not all that rare, but much more limited than the regular flagship run.

Wow those card backs are bright.

1984 Topps Tiffany

Year: 1984
Manufacture: Topps
Set: Collector's Edition "Tiffany"
Card Number: 10
Card Type: Base

I had a couple goals last year with regards to COMCs Black Friday sale.  My purchase was the most significant amount of Yount cards purchased in the last year and I wanted to make sure to fill a few holes.

One of those goals was to pick up the three remaining Topps Tiffany cards I didn't have.  I'm happy to say mission accomplished.  For those that don't know Topps put out a boxed set Collector's Edition, dubbed Tiffany by the hobby, from 1984 to 1991.  The set features the full flagship set on better card stock and has a glossy finish.  In hand the glossiness of the cards is really apparent.

2003 Topps Shoebox Collection

Year: 2003
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Shoe Box
Card Number: 65
Card Type: Base

I'm back!  Just spent a glorious 2 week in Hawaii and came back to Alaska for an 80 degree difference.  Ahem that being said let's jump back into my COMC black Friday haul.  Again we have another card I could have sworn I already had in my collection.  But after looking through my master spreadsheet and digging through the collection it looks like I was wrong.  Which could be easily understandable.  Even by 2003 Robin's 1975 Topps card had been reprinting probably over 100 times and he had a couple reprints in other sets around the same time.  The Shoe Box Collection was basically a complete set, with a box containing all 96 reprint cards and some other goodies.

This reprint and set is easily distinguished from the other 75 reprints by the nice big foil logo stamp on the front of the card.
