1994 Pacific Crown Collection - Gems of the Crown Silver Prism Hobby

Year: 1994
Manufacturer: Pacific
Card Set: Crown Collection
Card Number: 1
Card Type: Insert
Insert Set: Silver Prisms Hobby!

Colbey who writes the great blog Cardboard Collections decided to get back to holding his Affordable Group Breaks.  To get back into the swing of things his first break featured two early Pacific products, 1993 Pacific Spanish and 1994 Series 1 Pacific Crown Collection.  I didn't have a lot of Brewers cards from either set so for $7 I figured why not.  And boy am I glad I did.  There are some great inserts to be had in the set.  Not a lot of inserts and you only get a couple per hobby box, but Pacific introduced us to the Prisms.  The Silver Prisms came in two varieties the circular prisms which were inserted into retail product and these snowflake prisms that were exclusive to hobby boxes and a much harder pull.  There were a couple inserts I was hoping to get pulled during the group break, but getting a card I needed for my Yount collection, and a card that still has decent value was a huge shocker.  But it really made my day seeing this get pulled live.  A great addition to the collection!

All About the Base - 1994 Topps

Year: 1994
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 310
Card Type: Base

Here we are the end of the road.  Robin's final Topps flagship card.  He would get a few more tribute cards next year before the Yountless years of 1996-1998.  Robin announced his retirement on February 10th so being featured in the first series meant the checklist had already been finalized and most likely printing started for the set.  Which for us Yount collector's is a nice ending.  This year the Topps Gold parallel cards were a little more subdued with just the player name and the Topps Gold Logo being foiled.  This year Topps returned to the horizontal backs but still squished all the player stats over to the right side to allow for a back photo.

Whew that was a long ride.  I'm going to go back to doing some random card posts, but I do plan to do an All About the Base series for Robin's, Fleer, Donruss, Upper Deck, and Score flagship runs.

All About the Base - 1993 Topps

Year: 1993
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 1
Card Type: Base

This year Robin was given honor of being card #1.  I for the life of me can't remember if there was a reason for it or not.  Regardless this would be Robin's final year in the MLB.  We'll get one more base card next year.  Topps issued the set in two series, something they hadn't done in 20 years.  And this set was big, the biggest Topps had ever issued at 825 total cards.  And the gold foil parallel cards first introduced last year were so popular Topps added one to every pack.   Topps also changed up the backs going from the classic horizontal layout to the vertical, which made for reading all those stats just a little bit harder.  They also added a headshot to the back of the card, something that would get carried over to the 1994 set.

All About the Base - 1992 Topps

Year: 1992
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Topps Flagship Baseball
Card Number: 90
Card Type: Base

This is the dawn of a new era.  This year Topps upgraded it's card stock to a brilliant white.  Topps also introduced it's first inserted parallel set, Topps Gold, although they were tough pulls.  This set pretty much started the parallel craze as we know it.  Topps really nailed the early nineties in regards to it base set designs.  1992 is another multi-bordered set, but this set had some great photography.  I think everyone remembers the Benito Santiago card from this set.  But Yount's photo is pretty awesome as well.  A nice portrait shot in the dugout with the bat cubby behind him and Robin is leaning on one of his custom made bats with his facsimile auto on the bat strategically placed.

All About the Base - 1991 Topps

Year: 1991
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 575
Card Type: Base

While I loved the 1990 Topps set, I'm very smitten with this set as well.  I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the color coordinated borders.  Maybe it's the 40th Anniversary logo or the fact that logo is watermarked on the back of the card.  Maybe it's the bubble gum pink backs. Maybe it's the nostalgia that this will be the last flagship set printed on this kind of card stock.  Either way we get a great Yount card featuring Robin swinging.  The font size for the career stats continues to get smaller and smaller.

All About the Base - 1990 Topps All-Star

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 389
Card Type: Base Sub-set

Robin got two base cards in the 1990 set.  While the Topps set didn't have a dedicated MVP card for Robin, which is a shame, it did do these All-Star cards.  Interestingly Robin wasn't an All-Star in 1989, so this card is a little misleading.  However this card does celebrate Robin being a Top 5 Hit Leader in the American League.

The 1990 set is still one of my favorite designs.

All About the Base - 1990 Topps

Year: 1990
Manufacturer: Topps
Set: Flagship
Card Number: 290
Card Type: Base

Just got back from a two week trip to Wisconsin.  Got to see the Brewers lose to the Cubs in Milwaukee and got to eat a lot of fried food.  But I'm back and we are close to the end of this round of All About the Base.

1990's Topps is one of my all time favorite sets.  Sure it's smack dab in the middle of the Junk Wax Era, but man compare it to the other 1990 offerings this set stood out.  Hell this set would stand out in almost any era.  On top of that we get a great photo of Robin with a huge cheese eating grin relaxing at the ball field.  And in 1990 Robin had a lot to smile about.  He'd just won his second MVP award the previous year and while his 89 season wasn't his best it was still damn good for the elder statesman.

Now there's no room on the back of his Topps cards for anything other than career stats.

2018 Panini Diamond Kings Robin Yount Checklist and Gallery

It's pretty slim pickings for Brewers fans in this year's Diamond Kings, but Robin has a few cards and by a few I mean 16 total cards.   I'll correct card numbering once I find an example.
